I would wait until the middle of April and give it a try as at the moment the wrecks hold the odd small ling, laods of pouting and the odd cod but nothing special. The rough ground close in will hold the normal species but once again unless you hit a patch feeding on pipe fish or sprat its hit or miss.
So the answer would be ...if you dont mind not catching much but still having a day out then go for it, if you wish to have a few boxes full then leave it until mid April time and try the inshore wrecks 2-6miles off and the rough ground.
Mackerel and herring should only be 5-7 weeks away for inshore boats if the weather stays nice (yer i know a few have been caught but not good numbers)
Amble and Craster may hold some wrasse, pollack and cod this time of year but it should be packed with small whiting and colie as well as the odd other speice.
If you do make it out and the water looks clean then dont feel a fool by trying a pirk or twin tail, i caught my first ling of the year last year on a twin tail 31st of March and this year the water seems abit cleaner.
