Boat safety equipment

Had a mishap with a 6/0 treble hook through my finger last night, had to cut the hook and pull it through my finger, not much fun :( . It made me realise though that the cutting equipment on my boat just wouln't be up to the task , so I'm going to get a decent set of cutters to carry on board in case I have a similar accident afloat. Thought I'd mention it here for anyone else who might not have thought about it:)

There was a feature on this website the very same year (day in fact) that I first went out on Slinky Kate regarding the very same thing Ray...

...I wonder if he'll bite? :D

Ouch , Good point Ray ( Pardon the Pun ), it's wise to carry side cutters with you whether boat or beach fishing. Remember many years ago a bloke on a charter boat i was on getting a hook through the webbed skin between the thumb and index finger, he paniced and yanked it out past the barb, what a mess, claret everywhere...

I've probably had hooks in me before but can't remember ever having one so big and so far in, I've never had to cut one before and was quite surprised just how hard it was to cut, it was attached to a 16oz pirk and stuck through my right hand ring finger from the inside of the knuckle joint where it went in to the tip where the point was showing though the skin. I had to get my son to cut through it to separate the pirk from the hook as i had to hold the weight of the pirk in my left hand then I cut a bit more of the bend off before pulling it through by the point with a pair of pliers, it takes a bit of force to do that as well.
The thing is, if all this had happened on the boat when I am alone it would be very difficult to sort out. A good quality set of side cutters should make all the difference.................hope I never need them :red:

funny you should mention this ray, theres a set due to go in warlords first aid box this year, rather than the set in the tool box:)

Hope the pinky is ok Ray but to important things.....did you catch owt?

I have hooked myself a couple of times, the best one was when fishing the free stretch of the Wansbeck with my brother when I was about 12 during the summer holidays. He managed to get a size 8 hook stuck in the hem of his jeans at the bottom. Me being the older brother said I would get it out! I pulled the hook and proceeded to embed the bloody thing in my thumb and still be stuck/attached to the bottom of his Jeans!
We had to wait three hours attached to each other lying on the river bank with me begging him not to move his leg much until our Dad turned up to pick us up (the days before mobile phones!). He had to run to the hairdressers next to the bridge and borrow some scissors to cut the jeans and release me! It was off to Ashington hospital then to have it cut out, what a plonker!

Graham.

Aye it was just like that Paul, but it was a treble hook attached to a pirk and through my ring finger, actually I'm surprised how littlle it hurt, and I expected it to be very sore the next day, but apart from two holes 20mm apart you'd never know it happened. No pain or soreness at all, might have been a different story if the hook had just came out of a cods mouth instead of a new packet though.
