Fancied a session off the rocks and had planned on eyemouth area but with the sea being a bit on the big side over there, quick change of plan and headed west instead.
Set off tuesday night and kipped in the car at isle of whithorn so i could get an early start. Was on the rocks around the monument for six o clock spinning with jellys, gave it about an hour but nothing was doing so upped sticks and drove round to Burrowhead.
After a good old hike i found myself a comfy spot and set up two rods, one on the bottom and the other on a float, the only bait i had was frozen lug, razor and some limpets i'd pulled of the rocks so made up some juicy cocktails.
With about 3 hours of the flood left i was straight into a fish, a little cuckoo wrasse, new species for me so was chuffed to bits. 10 mins later the rod was banging again and pulled out a lovely Ballan just over 2lb, again new species.
Lost a couple more fish to snags and about an hour before high water managed to get another Ballan of around 2 lb.
By now the tide was really pushing through so wipped the float off and stuck on a jelly worm for a bit more spinning, shortly after got a take and i thought it would be a pollock but turned out to be a macky so stuck the feathers on was soon into another.
As the tide turned it was against the wind and the sea got really rough, i gutted the two mackeral and out popped a small sandeel which i put onto my float rig and chucked it out, 30 seconds later if that, i was into mackeral number 3 but no sign of the sandeeel so cut up a macky for strips and used them, caught another on the retreive with the float and then it all went quiet. By now there was a hell off a chop on the water so gave it a break and had some lunch, sushi and bread rolls, wasn't long before i'd devoured what was left of the mackeral i'd started to cut up for bait.
After about 3 hours of the ebb the sea started to calm down a bit so cast the bottom rod back out and put the float rod away.
Had a few rattles over the next hour but never mede contact with anything until i got a good knock and ended up with a doggie which decided to spew its belly full of little crab up as i was un hooking it.
Again had many more bites, landed a larl pollock and lost what felt like a good fish to a snag.
That time had come for the last cast, was about low water by now, big juicy bait on and lobbed it out to a pinnacle twenty yards out, rattle rattle, nowt, decided to see if it would come back and gave it another twenty minutes.
Called it a day and went to reel in and was snagged up, pulled for a break and the weight came away and low and behold ! another rasta to end the day,a ballan just over 2 1/2 lb.
Great day to be out, bit windy early on but the wind dropped late afternoon and was red hot walking back to the car but was well chuffed to have got some new species under the belt.
