Well, there's a whole range of things to protect the end of your rod, really it's down to your preferences (and hers/his)... If you use a lubricant though, make sure it's water based.
Edit - afterthought, what about the rubber end for a walking stick? Shop in Whitley Bay that sells everything under the sun has them for about a quid a go in a load of sizes (place on the road where the old bus station used to be, can never remember the name) be thick as owt...
