buying a boat overseas???

looking for next years boat, and have been thinking about getting something from overseas. Found someone in florida who sells boats that are repo\' jobs or seized by the feds.

and VERY cheap.

worth the risk?? The guy in question has a UK contact who arranges shipping (cost around 2 to 3k) so there will be someones door to hammer on if it all goes pear shaped.

with the dollar on the slide big time it makes it even cheaper. As an example he has a 31foot bayline with twin mercruisers, circa 1996. asking $4000, and thats just one of many, add the shipping VAT, duty aet and its a very cheap boat.

anyone had any experience of such things??

Are you willing to share any details - I will be in the market for a new boat in a year or so. I\'d need a diesel tho\' (no petrol pump at Hartlepool marina & I don\'t fancy lugging fuel for twin petrols down the pontoon). I\'d guess most US boats are petrol powered.

you want to start saving up for the petrol now,ian from the board has a bayliner trophy, lovely boat, but boy can it drink

Mark my brother is looking at a Sigma 35 yacht in Torbay to live on,not sure if its a done deal yet as he is overseas working,do you have any details of your contact in the states and i could forward it onto him,pm me if need be,thanks

the majority of yank boats do seem to be enormous petrol guzzlers. Saw a bayliner with twin 375hp chevy V8\'s - petrol! too scared to even guess how much they\'d drink.

I started by perusing ebay.com and one thing led to another.

Also found http://www.boatangel.org/ - christian organisation that gratefully accepts donations of boats to sell in the name of god (only in America!) check out the home page and see who 2 of their supporters are - george and tony

I\'ve decide that from now on i\'m going to refer to them as george and tony, as they sound like a pair of hairdressers and have equally appealling personalities

Hi Mark,

Don\'t even consider a petrol inboard m8 , you will need to tow a tanker behind you . Diesel has many advantages mainly that it\'s safer , does not have moisture problems (Petrol engines and salt water don\'t mix ) and more economical . As for importing I believe there is a 5% import duty plus VAT to pay on arrival . The radio and other certain electronics will not work in the UK either (if fitted )

there\'s no way I would even think about a petrol engine, way way too expensive

the electronics bit suprises me tho. Its gonna be 12v, so should work, granted the vhf frequencies/channels differ in the us, radr is just radar isn\'t it?? same for a fish finder and the gps should work if recalibrated (or left switch on during transit)

anything particular on the leccy front to be aware of

i think what Dave was meaning is that some of the american boats use a possitive earth instead of the negative earth we use, this may prove expnsive during repairs and fitting new toys, some of the frequencys are different on the vhf as you have allready said, but the rest of the toys are all the same if negativlly earthed

H Bob, As it happens a friend of a friend of mine has bought a boat down at Royal Quays with a large petrol engine in. He was asking me about changing it to a diesel and I told him that you had done some thing similar. He asked if you would take a look at it for him to give him some Idea as to wether it could be done and at what cost. If you fancy a look around it when your down there, give me a shout.

Cheers

Marc

but if the whole kit n kaboodle is as was ie the original gera on the same boat etc it should just switch on and go

nice to here from you Norman, never seen you down the marina for ages, its like a bloody ghost town down there this time of year....can i tempt you to fish the nesa comp this year ??? see you soon

Now Now keith, It`s the skipper i had the bet with not the lucky git who caught it :) :) :) but I`ll still get the round in next time we all get together

Bob, yeah your right about the ghost town bit, I`ve been down at some time every weekend just to keep on top of things and run engine etc but as you say there`s never anyone around.
It may be global warming and all that but its never been on a weekend this year believe me.

NESA Comp? ... well I may just be tempted if you lend me some gear and learn me how to chuck it a few yards or so, let me know when.

Only joking Norman, I\'m sure you\'ve chucked us enough bottles to more than cover the bet. You need a trip out soon Ian is turning in to a DIY freak!! :D
