Well I took the advice of Red Rock, Jim et al and fished the Wansbeck/Cambois beach...

Cracking evening...

Hadn't been out in ages so it was as much to stretch the legs as anything and it was also perfect opportunity to try out a new rod...

Firstly, by way of a review on the Shakespeare Salt Flattie rod - don't use grippers...they are a pig to pull out...that said it's a perfectly capable rod; prob best suited to very gentle or even flat conditions with a plain lead. A very slim blank but not too floppy...

Anyways I was fishing with a 2 hook flapper, ragworm and 2-3oz leads...few little knocks then eventually...

Red Rock did promise me a better stamp of flattie LOL...and that's what I got - a stamp sized flattie :D

Later on also hooked into a small coalie (no pic)

...and that was it in terms of fish caught - stayed for a couple of hours then headed off to S/Sluice for a couple of chucks before heading home

Pleased to see you got a couple Tony, it can be a canny mark in the winter too. A couple of hundred yards further south and a cast of 50-60 yards can be very rewarding ;)

Grippers can be a pig to pull out with a lot of very light rods Tony, if it is calm I always take a few plain leads as they cover a bit more ground.

Jim.

Great pics mate. But is this the time of year when all the flounder are out breeding or else emaciated after breeding? I remember catching a flounder every cast at the very end of March a few years back, up at Warkworth, and they were all skinny looking things.

No offence intended but your flounder looks a bit worse for wear!:o:D

Def a mark for the future Jim...looked very promising...may have to give high water a shot

It does look a bit ragged like - but it's just the pic - it was fin perfect juvenile, double sided too as the other side was the same colour

Got to say I prefer low water up there Tony, on a big tide you can not get onto the beach anyway lol. It is a while since I last fished there but had a few canny Codling.

Jim.

Nice to see you last night mate and well done on gettin a couple of fish...........you never seem to blank these days!! Can't wait for monday to get this pin out me finger :)

Aye Gregg - course it helps a little when you're only using geet small hooks - if I'd still not caught anything I was gonna head to High Shore and try for small fry LOL

Roll on Scotland next weekend :D

It's a shame you can't fish that light during the winter...felt quite nimble and spry compared to the pack horse I always felt like when lugging my winter gear about :D

As long as the sea is not too big you can fish that light any time Tony. I used to take my Carp rod down quite often, even just a Whiting gives a canny scrap on it lol.

Jim.

well done on getting something wallsendo. why dont you try were the hot water pipe is or was the next time or round the rokers area;) oh and i never use spiders when flattie bashing unless you have a real strong tide race infront of you,the bait moving about is better as the flat can not resist it.
