Catch report "Grace" 20/11/15

These days I rarely enter my catch reports but this report is a gentle nod to the boat owners who have recently declared their season over.
I left Royal Quays at 8.30am, picked up John and motored up to Blyth during slack water. The tide hadn't turned but the stiff Westerly generated enough movement to instill some life into my "sidewinder" and first drop produced a double figure Cod. We picked away steady despite very little tidal movement and our agreed quota was achieved within a couple of hours. Many many fish were returned during the course of the day with only "deeply" hooked fish being kept in addition to our quota. I guess the message is, there are still plenty fish about so don't write off the season just yet.

some nice fish and a lot more to be had in the winter if you can get out well done
dont understand why most of the boats pack up as there is plenty fish to be had over winter
but i suppose it leaves more for us kayak lads lol

Were you fishing the ground or wrecks?

Hi Kev, we were only fishing the rough ground a mile or so off Blyth / Cambois and we fished all of the ebb. We normally fish the ground when the tide's running but will often scoot out to the wrecks as the tide drops away.
Yesterday was a short shift by our standards because we traveled there and back during slack water. All of the fish were caught with shad or twin tail and although we occasionally piggybacked the shad with a prawn or some squid, the fish were just as likely to grab the lure without any added bait.
Water clarity is a massive factor when shad fishing on the ground and while the water off our northern ground is not quite "gin clear" it's still quite good for the time of year.

Interesting stuff Tony. Landing a double from the hard ground is even more of a success than pulling one in from the wrecks, well done. There’s obviously some very good fish around only a short run from the shore; you’ll be taking up your mates’ offers of a beach session at this rate.
