Me and me owld mate Hooker, and his long suffering better half Jude, thought we would have a look down to Claxheugh for an afternoon of flounder fishing. We got there about lunchtime and fished just into the darkness.
I left the Stanley Riviers in a blaze of sunshine, but the weather changed enroute. We arrived in a snowstorm, “champion” I thought. By the time we had set up the snow had given way to glorious sunshine although it was a bit nippy.
We set up with two rods apiece rigged with two hook flappers.
First fish came to that spawny bar stewart Hooker. A nice small flatty (What looked like a Plaice). It was covered in bright orange spots. Followed by a double header of Flounder. I started catching and then Jude got in on the action with a couple of Flounders. We caught steadily until high tide then it went dead for an hour.
I caught what I think was an Eelpout. Don’t know what size these grow to but it was well over a foot long.
We had intermittent snow showers and packed up when it got heavy just after dark.
A really good day out with me mates. A total of 16 Flounders, 1 Plaice / Spotty Flounder and an Eelpout.
Bait used: Lug, Rag, Mackerel, Squid, Bluey, Mussel and Razor Clam.
The Flounders were only caught on Lug though.
Bait eaten: Boiled Ham and mustard buns courtesy of Jude, cheers pet.
Some pic’s.
A really enjoyable day with good company and great craic.
