Been lookin on Viking Valhalla website (unreal site) gettin a few tips. Basically on setting up Shad rigs. Anything else I'll NEED to know b4 I go out. Away on a couple boats in nxt 3 weeks. And I'm pretty clueless. What sort of rod is best for starters. Uptide rod etc, size leads ? Baits. Best shads?
Cheers lads. STEVEO

I'm no expert Steve, but here are some thoughts. We hired rods from skipper first few trip to see if we liked the boat fishing and make sure we weren't sick etc. No use buying loads of gear then finding out boats are not for you!

We loved it, so now have floatation suits and wellies. Keeping warm is essential. I have Penn 7'4" ugly stick. 30/50lb, Penn commander, but now looking to upgrade to Penn 320gt or similar(anyone selling one please pm me), 50lb line or braid, leads 12 to 16oz, simple 1 hook flowing or pennel trace for bait -squid or mackerel. Daylites for some places. Shads - my favourites are hollow bellies or rhubard and custard, but each to their own. Shad on flowing trace below lead. Lynn has smaller and thicker 30/50lb rod. Advise 80 to 100lb
trace for Whitby incase of big Ling or Halibut !

I'm sure more experienced anglers will give you better advice. Hope you enjoy your trips.

You will need a boat rod rated 20 - 30lb some go lighter but I find this capable of handling most situations a decent reel a slosh 30 would cope as for braid eBay do some dymena 60lb rated cheap enough I would get some cannon ball leads 10 and 12 oz also take some pirks fitted with 7/0 trebles bait wise squid and mackeral will do the damage and a few oranges you will need atleast 15 leads hope this helps
