where do all the coalies go, during the summer months you can catch literally hundreds of four inch coalies down the side of any pier in our region, then in the winter they vanish ,now i know they can grow to a large size comparable to cod, British record i think is in the 40 lbs region, yet the biggest I've seen caught from the shore was just over 1 lbs ,and 8 lbs from a boat, to me they most be thousands of 10 lbs ers plus somewhere around our coast but where , i fished a sesh at eyemouth last year and must have caught 40 of them all in the half pound bracket so does anyone know where their big brothers hang out.

I think once they have reached breeding size they move of to colder waters off iceland and norway to spawn but unfortunately they dont seam to come back its a shame as they are a real sporting fish, when i was in norway last year the coal fish were putting the cod to shame a 10lb one was putting up more of a fight than a 20lb cod.

I had one over the 2lb mark whilst fishing at shields pier with a large mussel bait at distance. Only gave me two little knocks. May have just been a one off:)

:oWatch "Trawlermen"on t.v. that'll give you a good insite to where they go, thousands of them dead, to the bottom of the sea.:mad:

they feed up in the shallow waters around the coast then move offshore to feed on the larger fish etc, lads on the south coast seem to get some lunkers from the Channel wrecks.
