as the winter fishing seem.s to be getting worse is cod fishing turning into a summer sport from may to oct, seems to produce the best catches from shore and boat dont ya think , in the summer i travel up eyemouth, craster ect and seem to get more cod in those months, then the winter comes and the fishing die,s off , what ya think , jamcod

in the summer you can get some nice red cod off the rock edges, and the best winter fishing for cod is late september to december, after december it always goes quiet.
March used to be ok for the spring cod but it has been a long time since i saw a good run of spring cod.

thats what i think, some may differ.

Cod fishing is becoming less and less my 'main' focus, I've spent most of the winter looking forward to the summer coming around so I can get the light gear out and target Bass, Pollack, Coalie and wrasse. But maybe this is because I catch more over the summer. Won't be long now

cod fishing becomes easy if ya out in the boat come summer time but winter months us shore anglers try our best but i do likes a bit of boat fishing when i can get out to keep me going :D

i think dec gets worse as the years go by most clubs seem to start there winter matches before the summer ends , jamcod

About 3 years ago in august I had two codling of 2lb and 4lb off shields pier and they were fresh. Never had a one since in the summer but had some canny kelppies up at eyemouth.

my grand daughter hooked a fresh run cod in the middle of summer about 8lb on cambios jetty , we got it to the surface and she had a good look at it before it rolled over and snapped her 5lb line, jamcod

I had 2 fresh runners to 5lb 14oz in July when fishing a slight Northerly. A couple of weeks later I took 17 to 3 nd a half during another Northerly. Think this year, I'll start earlier and end sooner.

I lost a good cod guesstimated to be 6lb or so on the lift fishing the end of Shields late July last year  From when I got home at the beggining of July through until the end of November I was catching plenty of codling - since December it has been tough going and they have been very few and far between.

What's the best bait then for summer codling? The one's I mentioned earlier off shields both came on rag and out of the blue to me honest, but I reckon that crabs the bait off the rock marks up north.

in june one year tony taylor had a cod of 18lb.

spring run up here is now limited to the river tyne and to a lessor the wear but that realy has always been the case.

myself i think if more people carried on fishing thro. using fresh crab and possibly frozen during april may and june i think you would here of more cod catches.

after a heavy sea there will always be fish about up here especialy in the heavier ground but i think crab is essential especialy shore crab . imho

only bait for me in the summer is always fresh crab note i,ve had fresh crab in the past in late nov into dec and jan and never had a fish on it seems to have its season like all baits ,think we should start putting our rods away in dec and bring them out march the way things are going , jamcod

last couple of winters have been really good for me, especially end of jan to mid April. Have fished mostly at night though.

got more codling last summer from june till september than i have had this winter , bait used nothing , just macky feathers, cast out with the feathers let them hit the bottom and just pirk them off the bottom without reeling in, try it you might get a suprise, best sesh using this method of fishing 63 coalies up to 2lbs 7 mackerel and 5 codling up to 2lbs all caught on light gear, i even managed to get 1 coalie a mackerel a codling and a weaver all on the same string of feathers.
