Cod on fly ?

I've caught quite a few weeny ones on the north west coast both fly and float fishing close in and quite shallow. never anything bigger than 6". Don't know who had the biggest shock the first time, me or the little fish getting yarked out the sea by its napper!

Is Fly Fishing a tricky art to master? Fancy getting myself a cheapo set-up initially to see how I go....

not really, but there is IMHO an 'adjustment' period as you get used to handling a fly rod/reel which will probably weigh less all up than the weight on its own you use on the beach (one of my rods weighs under 3oz!), and when casting, you might have a tendency to 'throw' all the casting power into the forward cast, as you do normally, took me ages to appreciate that there's as much if not more finesse needed in the back cast as the forward

on the boat in summer keep a small fly rod ready rigged for when you go over a shoal of mackeral, weighted lure and don't worry about the cast that much just get it out and let it sink, if there's plenty of mackeral about they'll soon find it, followed by 5 minutes of mayhem as you try land the thing. unbeatable fun

I myself have`nt tried fly-fishing,but i do spin-fish after cod and get totally surprized at times when a cod(3 to 4LB) jumps on at the end in less than a metre of water:o its best in the evenings on stoney areas single-hook coast wobler example: Lystfiskernet.dk
some times i think am casting to far with my beach-rod so i do a bit of both.

Tried it a few times without success, apparently cod foam zonkers (large black zonkers)

and skunk flies (deer hair muddlers) are the kiddies over in Denmark

great looking flies rob!:) and matchman you caught a dover-sole on a spinner. i once foul hooked a big flounder in its back with a spinner, it gave a hell of a fight,i thought i`d hooked into a sea-trout:rolleyes:

here are some heavier "pirks" which work well catching cod, the fighter pirk 150g can be cast a long way but i use 100g on a bass-rod and i change the treble-hook to a good single hook to prevent snags.
3 stk. Fighter Pirk

there was a catch-report in febuary of a fishermen pulling in 6 big cod the biggest being 5,8kg (about 12LB) he was use a "fighter-pirk (60gram).
might be worth a try :)
(should be fished slow and as close to the bottom as pos. which is an art of its own to avoid snags)
