Continental style outfit.

and are they are using long continental rods to whinch say a 6lb cod up would love to see it.
 
Yes they are and have been doing so for years.i fish mostly those marks and have seen them used to good wffect with large fish on cliffs and heavy rock marks
 
i have seen pics of lads fishing the like of bempton cliffs and pics show them using steel poles with a pulley on end to whinch fish up.

nobody mentioned lifting fish with conti's i was refering to the reels you said were no good for lifting ?? but they use 16fters triplex/affinity/red metals on the cliffs down that way ive seen it but if they do get a good fish on it will most likely be handballed or put on a pulley and wound up on the reel

ok my mistake but i thought thread heading was about continental style outfit.

maybe if i extent my 14ft 10 rod by say a foot is it then called a continental rod.

the thread title is about conti outfits but the comment about fixed spools reels was just that not the rod its attached to

nie bother m8 getting a bit confused with it now.

i have quite a few rods as been fishing for yrs old git that i am but i use rods for diff venues species conditions etc etc.

i do have two continental rods penn rampage which chucks 125lead out for miles plus a sk4 16ft continental which also spits leads out for miles sk a bit stiffer than rampage but these two rods are not very good standing in rest when windy the blow allover so reading some posts on this thread it seems to me as if there are some very powerful types of continental type of rods about.
 
i was suprised one day when a pal of mine told me he fished yorkshire coast up on top of muddy bank not the likes of bempton cliffs and told me he was pendulum casting a greys triplex and wth 7 ounces of lead and it was going miles wouldnt chance it myself though.

They will do it john!....watched father Ted skim a near 7lb cod across the top of the water and then winch it up the side of Whitby West with a Triplex...no bother at all....was that impressed I bought one....haven't had anything above 3lb on it ...but it dealt with it no problem....you just need valium for the bites on braid...at first 1/2lb billet bites make your heart miss a stroke !:D:D
 
Been using a 15ft vercelli n a penn affinity 7000ld with 30lb braid n 80lb braided shockleader,just using overhead thump with 150grm it sends a baited rig a long long way,for you experienced anglers you will know wot I mean,those who haven't seen them continental's cast,it's worth giving it a try,you will be amazed:cool:bite detection is something else too....
Some long rod's can be floppy/wandy,I think it depends on wot you get..
Only used mine on clean sand/no lifting so can't comment on that aspect of the rod's capabilitie's,overall i'm well happy with my set up:)
 
My opinion is that most folk on here think that if a rod bends it's no good which is just a naive frame of mind to be in. I used an m4 evo all over Northumberland with no problems at all. And the FACT is a lot of lads are successfully using long rods and fixed spools in some of the most demanding situations that fishing can throw at you. The problem is that people don't want to know or should I say think they know best, when indeed they just don't, period.

What I will say though is that long rods, fixed spools and braid don't have to go hand in hand, FACT.
 
What a load of crap about lifting fish! Ask yourself when was the last time you fished a cliff and had to lift anything decent. Once a fish gets over 5-6lb any beach rod will struggle anyway, never mind a continental rod. The bigger fish just aren't about anymore and if you are lucky enough to get one then handball it up the cliff or pier wall simples. Enjoy your fishing with something lightweight, flexible and bite sensitive. You can land a 20lb fish on a 5wt fly rod.
Casting is a different matter where powerful rods and good techniques get you the distance. I've got continental rods with soft tips but more powerful butt sections than many so called cod rods. Continental rods are enjoyable to use and very efficient small fish catching tools, they also give a bigger arc and easy distance to those who have poor casting techniques.

i do know kieth adamson from seaham lifted a 10lb cod of seaham south pier with a zziplex 13ft ft yrs back.and my m8 ritchie shenton has lifted two double figure cod on a tri cast rod from the lane sunderland yrs back again.
and i do know two yrs back gary blanch had a 15lb cod from cliffs at easington so big fish still do exist but maybe not to the extent of yrs ago.
all in all these continental rods are a bit fun and everyone to there own myself i will stick to my heavier gear for the annual cod bash .
 
Just noticed post still active. I can give you update as to how I find them now. My Salt 15 ft with Penn 8000 and Braid is fantastic. Took it to Norway and pulled a 9lb Cod in no bother. The outfit reminded me of my fly fishing rod. You use the full bend of the rod to get the fish in. I know this outfit would never have got it up and cliff. On a calm night with a steady sea its brilliant.
When the sea is away and its stormy there is no doubt my Tip Tornado and multi are the better and stronger option.
In a nutshell the continental outfit is loads more fun to use and ok 75% of the time but when it gets rough the other outfit is my choice.
Mick. Ps I am fishing tomorrow in the Tyne and using a Salt Bass rod. Small fixed spool and braid.
