heard recent reports of good catches of cod to daylights baited with prawns .has anyone else heard of this as a good bait for boat fishing.
not sure whether to believe or not.

I don't see why prawns wouldn't work, lots of cod I have gutted have had prawns on their stomachs.

Welcome to NESA by the way! ;)

I moved this post from the NFSA area for you.

Hello Stevie, nice to see you posting mate.

I would reckon they would be fresh myself but I am here to be corrected lol. It wasn't that daft northern soul dancer that told you was it lmao.

prawns

i have seen cooked prawns used many times with mixed results, its like most baits ,it depends on how many fish are there, and what they,re feeding on . i personely used raw black tiger prawns both shore and boat ,ended up cooking and eating them myself

Gent's - I fished out of Newton by the Sea on Wednesday with flowing spinner traces c/w lug, rag and Mussel cocktail and managed about 6 keeper codling

the rest of guys were using daylights baited with fresh whole prawns and many of them managed allot more than myself!!

When I 'borrowed' a prawn or two I was also rewarded with a couple of fish!

Just goes to show, many of them spent a couple of quid on prawns and I spent £16 on worms!

Cheers

Pretty much all of the cod i have taken over the past few weeks have been full of prawns and other orange crustacions.

All tho i have always thought cooked bait is pants

Not used prawns myself ,well not from a boat anyway ,but they can be dynamite from the shore ( at times ) ,Newbiggin seems to throw a few out on prawn in the winter months . Oh and most of the fish we've caught lately have been stuffed with pipefish as has been posted before ,pity you can't buy them by the packet :D

Steve i can get you as many as you need weather depending, usually live .Have you tried them for bait.? Give some to Tim at Frasers which he froze them down not sure if anyone bought or caught anything on them.

Thanks for the replies, and no it was not from Paul but some people fishing out of seahouses last week, can only try, like someone said cheaper than worms or crab! thanks for help still trying to find my way round site.

Always worth a try Stevie mate. My mate Rob used them on Blyth beach quite a bit and had some decent Codling with them. I tried them at the same time and couldn't buy a bite with them lol.

My Uncle works on one of the boats that takes pleasure cruises out around the Farnes and he told me that on quiet times they take the rods and only ever use cooked prawns and always catch.....I thought he was taking the **** but he was deadly serious

Hello Tony

Apologies for my delayed reply!

Yes, I copied the rigs, well no, I did worse than that! I manged to get my hands on Brian's rig wallet (now returned allot lighter!)

Back to the prawns, I have fished them on both flowing traces and also simply hooked onto daylights,

On both rigs I caught fish but I can honestly say that prawns on daylights were the best combination.

As a rule, I always leave them in full shell and head intact.

A couple of quid for a box or bag, you cant go wrong!

bounced this to the top as a mate was out of hartlepool today three fished and caught 40+ cod over 3lb each the rig that did the business was pink hokai with cooked prawns on the hook.

Used some big prawn on a boat last week and did,nt do nowt. Still it was pretty quiet with everyone.
I also think the prawns i got from Morrisons were a tad to big.

Mick.
