Used up another voucher lads at Derwent (got half dozen as retirement pressie from lads and lasses at work).
Started again in the bay of plenty. Could see fish rising and taking fly from the surface. Put on a dry fly black hopper and had half an hour but no luck. Resorted to lures again. Couple of anglers were using green goldhead damsels and were getting a fish a cast. Nearest i had was a goldhead green catswhisker. Hooked at least 4 which threw the hook. One of the lads was saying the trout chase the lure bite it then swim around to pick it up - which in nature its there way of killing food. Which explains why fish were not connecting.
Moved after a few hours to North shore and deep water. Wind was in my face so ended up using sinking line with cats whisker. Picked up a 4 LB Rainbow which fought long and hard but was eventually netted.
All in all a good days fishing but i still feel very much the amateur when i see other fly fishermen nailing them.

Mick.

Sounds a tough day Mick, mind theres plenty of them mate!
If the lads were catching on olive damsel type flies,a Dawsons or similar is a good sub especially in smaller sizes,10's or 12's.If fish are rising but wont take a dry,try a grhe on a slow fig of 8,can be lethal into the wind on a floater:)
All the same,a 4lber is a canny result on a hard day;)
