Personally speaking, I think the 63cm ling size is a joke. My personal criteria is, can you get a fillet off the fish rather than a fish finger? That goes for all fish, including cod. The 35cm size is also way too low for them.

Hi Jim, agree totally with you, the 63cm legal take size is an absolute disgrace; I don’t think I could sleep at night if I kept something as small as that.
And like you say, what will you actually get off the fish flesh wise, very little indeed, but there are people who will keep this sized fish, I’ve seen it first hand, and even voiced my disgust with the “angler” in question (and I use that term very loosely) only to receive a mouthful of unadulterated Anglo Saxon expletives.

I’ll carry on returning fish I feel are too small regardless of there being a size which says I could keep it, I know it’s only a very small contribution to help maintain fish stocks, but I’ve seen plenty others do the same, (much to some astounded looks from these so called “anglers”) which makes it a little easier to stomach.

To be fair, by the time you fillet a 72cm there would not be much left either, certainly more hassle than it's worth if you have my filleting ability
