whats the best clipped down rig to use when fishing at range over sand/shingle.using a single hook and sand eel/bluey would a breakaway bait shield get more distance and keep the bait intact.will be using 13ft rod with 6500 size reels and 5oz leads

paternoster with impact lead , seems to out cast any other lead rig combo

Shame you can't get hold of the D-Vice any more, though expensive they were superb for long range fishing with big fish baits.

Personally I use a bog standard paternoster rig with a Dusty Bin Namix weight and the sandeel clipped directly to the weight bait clip. As long as it's mounted right with plenty of bait elaccy and a decent bait stop above the hook to stop the air pressure forcing the bait up the snood you should have no problems.

Are you targeting rays with these baits. If you are a longer hook snood is best,on a up and over trace with a tensioned hook snood clipped up during casting,a srt spring above the hook snood rigbody swivel will do this, use only a short 15" to 18" max length rigbody, inverted gemini rig clip at one end and a breakaway Imp at the other lead weight end.

Personally fishing at range with that bait taking that your fishing for rays I would be using a clipped down up and over rig shirt rig for casting but allows a bigger hook snood to get the bait away from the lead. Impact leads do cast further for me. However using a sand eel or bluey baits is easier and better display on a Pennel rig as it allows the bait to be less bulky and not to wobble creating more distance .IMO

I was using pully droppers last year when fishing at distance for place,i was using the breakaway impact leads with the clip built in but a lot of times the thing unclipped ,not sure when it was unclipping but I could see it had come away as the lead was traveling.the plastic shield on the leads seemed really easy to move up so it might have been the air pressure pushing the hook off the clip

Pulley dropper for me. Ive had too many issues with long and low rigs not releasing properly. Ive given up on long and lows although others swear by them. If distance is your goal then thinner mainline diameter would probably offer a quick win too. Maybe 12lb or 10lb if you can get away with it rather than the more usual 15 or 18.

droppers, long n low/up n over, clipped up running ledger or clipped paternoster.

or if u like two snoods over long distance, 2 hook bomber , 2 hook loop or cascade . all the best and tight lines

Few simple ways for anyone to gain more or get good distance, any angler over clean ground.Thin main lines with leaders, example O.3mm,12lb main line, compact short bodied rigs, the minimal and smallest rig components you can use, single small stream lined bait clipped tight behind lead.No secrets,no magic, multiplier or fixed spool should get anyone extra yards.

if trying local for a ray would horden be best bet,i think I can remember reading that the odd one used to get caught at lynmouth.theres a lad on another local forum that's tried horden before

7 or 8oz leads will give you extra distance with big baits. You may need a beefed up hernia pole though!!

I find the flat back namix best (better than impact leads) but it must have the correct bait clip built in or they wobble and helicopter killing distance. Also make sure snoods are well stretched and very tight with no slack.

Might aswell have my say lol, depends wot u r fishing for really:rolleyes:if it's rays u r targeting, without a doubt u need a long flowing hooklength, imo the prob with up n overs is that they r prone to kinking your snood(even with an srt)4 me the pulley dropper is the way fwd, presents a long snood, clipped behind the lead, know dam to snood, releases everytime:)works 4 me.If targeting cod or/bass try a clipped dwn paternoster or even a std pulley rig,if after"bit's"a 2 hook loop is ideal for coalies, pout, codling, dogs, plaice etc.Regards bait clips,I fav a uk hooks or namix sinker with an imp tight behind the sinker(sml neat baits)if using large fish baits like bluey or full squid I prefer the impact shield(prevents unclipping n bait wobble in flight).Enuff babbling from me lol, hope u get the answer u r looking 4,plenty of good advice given above, best of luck:)

Possibly... I've never ever had one fail... Try using a longer piece of the rubber tubing to hold it in place
