Many thanks to Dave & Richy for what is always a great day out.

Started out a bit murky....... visibility was down to about 15 feet due to the fog at around 6 miles out. Looked to be a good day in the offing, fishwise - 4 fish on the 1st drift, but things turned VERY quiet. Despite visiting many wrecks - even going up to 13 miles off, there weren\'t many fish about.
Bit of a S.E. wind picked up and in conjunction with the sun, managed to get rid of the fog. We were in red hot sunshine for the afternoon and the wind died away as quickly as it picked up. Called in on a few of the closer to shore wrecks on the way back in and that seems to be where the fish had been. We were all soon into fish again.

Dave had a big thump on his rod and was anticipating a repeat performance of Fridays\' 20lber........a good sized fish eventually broke the surface, but it was hooked tail on. Dave was using barbless hooks and the main concern was in him loosing the fish......best to net it.....well that was the idea.....lol. Now, to some, it may have looked like the fish was deliberately \"pushed\" off the hook with the net before it was landed, but WE all know it was un-intentional. Anyway, one big splash and it was away back down to the depths.

Had the company of several Gannets all day.....any fish we returned had little chance of escape. Richy fed one of them 4 whole Mackeral and it was still looking for more. Surprising how it still managed to take off from the water....lol.

Ended the day with the customary pint in the Zetland.

Who could want for a better day?
BRILLIANT.

Those Gannets were going mad yesterday, we had at least 20 following us, as soon as they saw some macky being brought up they were diving down and snatching the fish off the hooks.

Aye Keith,
They were even chasing pirks, THINKING they were fish beiing brought in.....lol

I must try to get a trip out sometime PURELY to get some photographs and not to fish.
I NEVER take a camera with me when I go out fishing as I\'m taking photographs every day at work, but I\'ve missed so many great photo oppotunities, I\'ve gotta take my camera gear instead of fishing gear, one day.

Richy asked the question that I\'ve been wondering about myself for ages......where do they nest?

I\'ve not heard of a gannet colony in the N.E.

Obvious thought was the Farnes, but I don\'t recall having seen a gannet colony there, either.

Of course, they may NOT nest in the N.E. and just be \"passing thorough\".......but there were several young birds among the adults, who looked like they were in their 1st season.

Coquet Island and Holy Island, I know can get thousands of them, but do they nest there?

Any ideas ?????

tony,

the bass rock off north berwick is the largest gannet nesting ground in the northern hemisphere....apparently, these birds are maybe from there

Yep, I knew of Bass Rock, Les......Very possible that they may br from that colony. I was just trying to think of possible sites a bit closer to home. However, as they DO travel thousands of miles, the Firth of Forth is only a relatively short distance for them, I suppose.

If you wanna learn more about the life of Gannets, take a look here.....

Looks even more likely that the birds we get off the N.E. coast are indeed from Bass Rock.

yeah TC , we had the same .............. invented a new game today ....... LOL feed the gannet
hahah got a surprise when I cast a few yards and there was such a big splash from aheight ,,,,,,,,, a gannet chasing my mackerel bait :) :)
