Taking a lead from Norman I set off at 4.30am , I should have stayed in bed , straight out to the six mile wrecks , nothing doing at all , further out still nothing doing ,even drifted some rough ground with nothing but strings of mackerel to show for it, eventually a pollock and a small cod from two different wrecks lifted my spirits a bit, I thought about coming back in but with the spring tides I didn't want to chance grounding over the bar or cill so made the decision to stay out till the tide had turned and was well on the rise.
The sun came out, the wind turned more easterly , which for once was a blessing as the drift improved , and I found a wreck full of lovely hungry cod :)
I filled the fish box using pirks and shads in no time at all , I had three small ling to the pirks and a few small coalie, all of which were returned , whether the ling survive or not I will never know , I try my best not to catch them as they always blow, but they insist on taking my lures :(
By 3pm I was in a completely different state of mind from the morning blues and didn't want to come back in the fishing was so good, I had an appointment with a Cantonese restaurant later in the evening though so had to drag myself away from it all :(
I weighed the biggest cod which went just on 8lb , there were a couple more similar size to that one, the rest were probably 4-5 lb, nice big fillets :)
On another note , I've been using an avet reel this season but lost the line off it to a couple of wrecks and had to change back to the Abu 7001 , I jammed my finger in the level wind with a 14 oz pirk hanging over the side , jees it hurt, I had to use brute force to extract my finger from it and took a chunk out of the skin, more blood on the deck:rolleyes:
The thing is though, the avet is a lovely reel , but the Abu is far superior for fishing shads, the auto engage makes it much easier to fish the sink and draw method, I might have to go back to the abus full time :(

Super Ray, I may be frequenting your grounds later on this week!;) Just for a confindence booster as the last two trips off have been hard graft to say the least!
Hope the pinky gets better quickly and doesn't hamper your fishing!

Graham.

Well done Ray, well worth the "shopping around" :)

I never use level wind reels, just another thing to go wrong, with the added possibility of the dreaded finger jam :) :)

great report as ever

Nice one Ray, pleased you got amongst them in the end.

I always find myself back using my trusty red 7000 , the tld 15's nice but I do like the old Abu 7000.

Great stuff Ray!

Why not just remove the level wind from the Abu?

I've never had any problem with the level wind before keith, I just decided to replace the abus and needed a lefty wind, the abus are great reels but are starting to corrode, I bought the avet as a replacement , it's a lovely reel but you have to engage the wind manually to reel in wherea s the Abu you just turn the reel handle, so fishing a shad is much easier with the Abu, just drop to the bottom, turn the handle and wind back up, the avet is drop to the bottom, engage the wind via the drag lever then wind back up, after years of fishing with the abu I keep forgetting to engage the wind and turn the handle and nothing happens.:red:
I like the look of the snowbee deep blue multiplier , but it might be the same as the avet , I just want something that is going to last a long time without corroding away or dropping to bits, probably a big ask for sea fishing.
