f***ing half-term

my mate and I had planned to get out tomorrow, was thinking south shields pier but have just realised that its half term so the all piers will be full of kids asking 'to borrow' gear as the they have lost the one 2oz weight they bought today, or for some bait because they had not perceived the need for bait when fishing or my favourite the shop didn't have any bait left.
I am all for encouraging kids to fish but under a certain age they should not be allowed to fish on the pier by themselves, but should be with there parents supervised and protected from injuring themselves or others, and not scrounging and annoying people.
My mate is new to fishing and is a bit quiet so I don't want him put off fishing by this plague, so has anyone got any suggestions for a good rock mark to do some some spinning or lure fishing off, or maybe somewhere along the tyne or surrounding coast to do some bait fishing that wont be swamped by other peoples little treasures.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions

yawn seriously who do you think you are? you dont own the pier. if your getting riled about a few kids spending their time trying to fish why not encourage them to loiter on street corners instead and turn to petty crime? Bet you are like 80% of the people on here: you moan publicly at e.g. local government expenditure re pensions etc, yet you prob have one yourself.

Generally speaking it's not the kids that are the main problem on the piers this time of year it's the blokes with bags full of cans getting pi55ed that's the problem. Encourage the kids, the younger ones who are obviously a little bit too young to be allowed on the pier on their own need someone to show them a bit support and advice if their parents don't give a damn about them. I always keep things like old hooks, swivels, line I've taken off reels etc then put them in my bag this time of year, kids usually respond to encouragement. The amount of times I've pointed kids in the right direction then they've caught a few fish they would otherwise have 0% chance of fish. If I have time I even tie a few sets of home made feathers up with old hooks and line and give them to kids on the pier who obviously have been just left to there own devices and need a helping hand. I despair at some anglers attitude to kids, if they don't get a little help and advice some of them will undoubtedly turn into the drunks and druggies of tomorrow. The look on kids faces who have never caught fish because they are doing something wrong then are pointed in wright direction then start catching fish is priceless.

well said micky

Would love to take my grandson on to the pier fishing but what with the ignorance of some people who get on these piers who seem to think that swearing in front of these young ones is O.K. It seems to be a no go area for some parents and grandparents, put a swear box on the end of any pier and send donations to the R.N.L.I. WONT TAKE LONG TO FILL IT UP

I could not agree more, but you will allways get the numpty complaining, What did he do when he was a child, probably a tea leaf, twoc wonder what borstal he went to, but well said in defence of the majority of most kids, and again well said Micky

I was out a few weeks back when a young lad and his grandad came over to talk to me it was his second time out i havent been fishing all that long but it was good been able to show him a few knots, i had a few old rigs in me box which i gave him and showed him how to bait up...they were both over the moon that i took the time to help them....i agree some of the young un's can be a pain in the behind but i find the majority just want to learn how its done....

1 No as a kid I went to the park played football and other games with other kids, my friends and I enjoyed are time away from parents and other adults.

2 If I wanted to go to the pier or somewhere similar I had my dad or my uncles to take me.

3 Sorry never been in borstal or clav, I am educated and have worked all my life, am a nurse hope I am making you proud Pricey.

The issue I have is with badly behaved kids on the pier, I have seen young kids on the piers that have been polite and friendly and are an example to how other kids and a lot of adults on how they should conduct themselves.
The pier is a dangerous place I would not want my young children on by themselves and would be mortified to find they were scrounging.

I agree with both sides in a way.

I started fishing the pier at 7 and fishing it on my own or with a mate at 12, i know what the "adults" could be like when your only after abit of help and i ended up self teaching myself...our days i do try and help them out and feel over the moon when one comes to me and asks me for advice in a polite way.

I have also had the idiots casting over my head while getting high and worse still caught one last year with his hand in my bag after my trace wallet when i turned around.

So from me it is a case of help any that ask for it or not causing problems and struggling and keep a close eye on the others.

I also agree with Micky, last couple of times on the pier its been the 30-45 year olds causing most of the problem with drink etc.

We all knoww hat the piers are like int he summer, good job the UK has water on every part of it err :)

well am gan doon bleyth peeyah the neet man az ganna cach me loooads of macky an dump em coz am geet clivva and hard as fook leyk

...seriously though, am going go to the Pier tonight after work - will post my findings :D

my experience is that the adults are as bad if not worse than the kids...

Ditto, always found age is mostly irrelevant, if people are going to act like mooks then they will and if they're in a group then they usually follow whatever the rest of the group are doing - whether that's being decent and sensible or acting like animals.
