Fathom vs slosh

Right ladies and gents,

I'm currently using a couple of slosh's which I have absolutely no issue with. But! Isn't there always a but? I fancy a new reel, and Its looking like a fathom15. What I want to know though, is the fathom much of, if any of an improvement on the slosh?

Casting/build quality/winching power and anything else you can comment on would be appreciated.

Fathoms are a far better reel in terms of drag, build quality and smoothness when casting. The retrieve has an infinite anti reverse also which is a big improvement over the slosh. There is an issue with brake blocks slipping (not a problem I ever had mind). I would recommend you get someone like Chris Macey to monomag them if you get them. Turns it into an amazing reel that can be tuned in an instant to suit the conditions. Sloshes I have had always suffer from weak spindles and i have been through a few. Not an expensive repair, but annioying. Seems to be a fairly common problem in this reel. You can get more and thicker line onto a SLOSH30 mind. I wish they did a wide spool fathom in a 25 size like they do the Torque. It would be a best seller up here!

What about the saltistbetter than both reel's,but if it's the fathom your intrested in,I have the 12 with a cm conversion,lot better reel than the sloshe's although in fairness a lot more modern,it's not so long ago the sloshe's were THE reel to have......
I must admit I do like the fathom,cast's amazingly well n has nice winching pwr
Just to throw a spanner in the werks lol,wot about 535 not the mag 2 but the built like a tank,original version,now they are seriously well made..

slosh 30 over a fathom 15 anyday for me mate, and as for cranking power, my slosh 30 is way better than my fathom 15, the only advantage i find that the fathom has over the slosh, it casts better.

What is it about the saltists that is Better than the fathom?
Are they worth the extra £60? From reading up it appears the finish on the saltist isn't very resilient, but I've heard the overall quality is better due to being Japanese and not Chinese. If I were to go the saltist route I really think I'd want the hsh with a mag but then your talking money I don't have spare.
In truth I proably don't need a new reel at all but then I didn't need the new rod I bought in november either.

Tbh andy,there's nowt wrong with the fathoms,just that the saltist's are better made,yes they are prone to scratches/marks but in general they are very well made,can't go wrong with the penn's tho m8...

I have had the slosh 20 and the slosh 30 great reels last you for years if you keep them clean, sold the 30 to get a fathom 15 last year now have two fathom 15 once you get the brakes sorted out and clean away all the blue grease and replace with oil to suit your casting ability then the reels are spot on I have had no problems.
also have the penn mag 2 not that keen on this reel , so its used as a spare reel in the tackle box.
each year there are new reels on the market the slosh have been going a very long time and they have sold many all around the world, does that not tell you the reels are good value trouble free.

Dale you absolutely right, if it ain't broke don't fix it! But saying that, I have no intention of getting shot of my 20 or 30 one will stay in my box as a spare in case I blow one up or lose a load of line, and the other can be used on a 2nd rod when on the beach, then I always have a spare.

As I said initially I am happy with the slosh but I would just like something a bit more modern, if that makes me a tackle tart then so be it

Prefer the fathom to the bg20. Having had both the fathom is caster Friendly. Fixed spindle in Bg20 floating spindle in the fathom.

as stated before keep your slosh reels tried and tested over the years.
put some cash away each week in a tin sharp mounts up, I tend just to stick any change in my tin been out for a pint or a take away then treat yourself get a penn fathom 15.
if you pay cash you can get a good deal at some tackle shops .
its just my opinion but they are cracking reels. other lads have there own opinion on the reels but my last one was on order for 2 months from veals as there was no more left in the uk sold out.
if there where no tackle tarts m8 a lot of tackle shops would close

I prefer the way the penn reels sit on the rod. Find the slosh get sin the way of my grip on rod and reel when casting so would all day go with the penn. that is probably due to my casting technique or size of my hands though. I use the penn 515 and 525 mag2 reels and they are both spot on. Nowt wrong with the slosh though
