Favourite country pubs??

As we couldn\'t get away for a honeymoon due to the kids, we decided to have a bit time to ourselves this week once the kids were off to school. Basically we\'ve went for a walk (and did a bit photography) and then lunch in a country pub.

So far we\'ve done the Potters Wheel in Sunniside (great food and 5 guest ales) The Pack Horse in Burnhopefield (great food and 2 guest ales) and The Sand Dancer in South Shields when we were pushed for time (no guest ales, the bitter was off and the food was greasy and tasteless - but then again, not a country pub)

I\'ve still got a few of my old favourites to try (The Rat in Hexham, The Church Mouse in Chester Moor and the Lion and Lamb in Horsley) but I was just wondering where the other NESA members go for a quiet drink and a good pub meal??

Potters Wheel and the Pack horse, used to be there quite regularly a few years back Rob ,also the Marquis of Grandby and The Rose at Streetgate ( on the way to the Potters Wheel ) . One of the best would have to be The Robin Hood on the Military Road ,we met Jack Charlton there and also the White Swan at Dinnington . More recently we tried the Shiremoor Farm ,which is lovely inside although I though the meals sound better on the menu tha.n they are ( my oppinion )

Nice to see you up again mate :D .

We were in the Rat last week the guest ales are always good and they have staff that know how to pour it also.

Some canny ales in the Derwent walk Inn at Ebchester with some cracking scran.

We are lucky around here in that we don\'t have to travel too far for good food and drink. Loads of good places within half an hour.

Jim.

Quite like the Warkworth House Hotel at Warkworth,Northumberland, cracking bar meals,I have\'nt been for a while but I presume its still ok :(

I know exactly what you mean about the Shiremoor Farm Steve :(

I\'ve heard a few good things about the Derwent Walk Inn Jim, might give that a try as well mate ;)

Any good places north of the Tyne, apart from Alan\'s at Warkworth?

Aye Rob the Robin Hood ,try the mixed grill ...quality fare or (I\'ve not been but ) had it recommended loads The Duke of Wellington in Riding Mill.

The Forge at Ulgham, dont think they do meals midweek but definately on a weekend, great scran and service ;)

none of the ones in weardale, they\'re all full of peadophiles and sheep shaggers!

lord crewe at blanchland\'s canny

The Horseshoes at Rennington
The Marina at Amble
The Cook and Barker at Newton on the Moor (highly recommended)
The Saddle Grill at Alnmouth
The pub at Stamford Cott whose name escapes me....(same area as Rennington)

The Keelman at Newburn was given Gastro-pub of the year or something a while back (I don\'t think it\'s marvellous but it\'s decent enough) It\'s also the home of Big Lamp brewery so the ale isn\'t bad.

The Plough at Stamforham does a cracking meal (bit pricey) but they seem to be leaning toward restaurant rather than pub meals now. Nice place though.

Just got back from the Battlesteads Hotel at Wark. Definately the best of the bunch so far this week. 3 guest ales (I had the White Velvet and it was the best pint I\'ve had all week) and the food was unbelievable.

I had the cured beef salad with tomato chilli chutney for starters, followed by lambs liver with caramelised onion mash and gravy. Our lass went for the grilled asparagus and mozzerella on toast, followed with the homemade beefburger, chips and salad. We both had the strawberry and limoncella panncosta. All absolutely delicious, all absolutely faultless.......and the best thing was the bill, only £27.10 for the lot (including the drinks). I would have quite happily paid £80 at Romano\'s in Cleadon Village for the same meal. They\'ll definately be seeing more of us in the future 10/10 :D

Sounds cracking Rob ,shame I\'m on a diet ,well until tomorrow at least.
As Lemmylad says The Keelman is canny ,has its own micro brewery and so the beers canny as well ,the food is not as good as it could be but still not bad at all.

lambs liver with caramelised onion mash and gravy.

Had the same at Morrisons, Cowgate on Wednesday, special offer £2.99 and a cardboard cup of diet coke. You can even read the tattoos on the next table while you wait on hacky table for it to be served. :D

Never tried it yet for food but The Coach at Lesbury looks lovely food. The Sunday dinner is supposed to be cracking.

the blue bell stanley does a good meal well worth a look, not sure if they sell real ales though as im a lager lout :P
