think long and hard about this bonny, lad just how often r u goin to use it??? are you goin to moor it or trail it? can you do running repairs/maintain it your self? have you got someone to share running costs? those are a couple of negative thougts HOWEVER on the other hand there is nowt better than gettin up at daft o clock, in the summer suns up seas flat and your off where you want when you want.its absolutely grand!!! dont buy in haste take all the advice you can get theres some bloody good lads on here ENJOY

Dont forget you will need to spend money on essential safety equipment so dont blow the full amount on a boat only. Check out the R.N.L.I Sea Check list online. If you get one private with a bit luck you'll get odds and ends with it. Its an expensive hobby but one you will enjoy

first boat... as in first boat ever??
if so, I 'd suggest going for something displacement or semi displacement, hull wise & suitably small outboard
more sea kindly for a first boat, easier to handle and probably a lot more within you're price range. Not going to break any speed records, but some of the best fishing can be within 2 or 3 miles anyway. Be cheaper to run - big 2 stroke outboards drink petrol like its going out fashion. Had a 14' boat with a johnson 40 on it, would get 2 miles to the gallon! Displacement boat is only going to need 10 to 15hp so will be cheap to run
RNLI sea check is a free service, they come to you and give everything the once over and offer loads of friendly advice & suggestions
get someone with a bit of experience to go out with you a few times

I'm not a boat owner but one of the first things I'd do is the RYA Powerboat course as well...pays to have a bit of "know how" under your belt IMO

aye, the rya course is ok, but I"ve always felt a few you'll learn more from a few proper trips out to sea with someone who knows the ropes than pootling about in the river

very true but a bit of theory under yer belt is never a bad thing either surely?...it's always surprised me that ANYONE can buy a boat and head straight out to sea without any kind of experience necessary

me & 2 mates bought a 12 ft dory plus a trailer, £400, snotts lush little thing, we were very& I mean VERY lucky to get a moor/space on the boat house on Whitley Bay beach,got hold of a 5/6 ish hp 2 stroke twin, it gets us out, but could do with a 10hp engine,as it does lack a bit of power, but it does the biz just, dropped it last winter £280 snotts worth of damage, so if something goes wrong its a little costley, something to do with the engine management system?? electrical, but thers nothing better than getting up at stupidOclock & going fishing on a beautiful summers morning,even better is the call at mid-day,"grab Your gear, I"ll pick you up after work, got the bait, were on for 4or5 hours fishing its spot on,we dont have to go to far, you get to know the spots, ours is 3/4 of a mile off S.T Marys lighthouse drifting towards Tynemouth, for a mile then back to the lighthouse, 2or3 times, we are stuck to the tides, roughly 3 hours before high tide, & 3 down, any longer and we get stuck on the rocks ,, not good,, got to wait for another 6/7 hours so we can get in, get all the gear,, radio, life jackets,compass take a cheep / 2nd mobile,a few cans of coke or whatever, dont reccomend any lager/alcohol,but the odd can on a hot summers day is just brill, loads of petrol, you dont want to run out,we take a pair of oars just in case,Also tell someone you are going out, and what time you expect to return, give them a buzz now & then letting them all is ok,and get the frying pan on,and chill down the beers cos were on our way in,if you can chuck a lobster pot or 2 out, you never know your luck,we get the odd one, but be carefull on the size & if its carrying eggs put it back, cos thers allways someone watching you,& its a canny fine if your caught, not 100% on the new laws that are out now,I have been told you need to micro chip your pot but not to sure,I am & we are totally self taught, 4 years on we are still ok , we never take the mick out of the sea, cos it will have you if you mess up, the sea will have you, take it easy, listen to what people say to you inwardlydigest dont take any chances, our is --- 'If in doubt? divvent gan out,' most of all catch some bigger fish & enjoy cos its LUSH

My first boat was a seasafe 15ft with 10hp honda 4 - stroke. Cost me about £1500 in all but very limitted space. I now have a Seahog Sea Jeep with 30hp Suzy 4-stroke and 4hp back up. I paid £4500 for this but it is just so much more practical than the previous boat. It will fish 3 comfortably and has a cathedral foam filled hull. Even the older models are cracking little boats. If you are going to launch your boat yourself an 18 footer can be handfull. If you are towing it you will probably need a braked trailer as it will tare at over 750 kgs and a braked trailer is a nightmare when you are submerging it in salt water. I can honestly say that I wouldn't really want any other boat to mine at present although a few more hps would help it plane better. If you are going to moor it of course then none of the above applies. Just a few considerations.............
