Hi Reg, Yes it was a great time back then with many big cod recorded. It was I think 1985. Ken Robinson and myself had quite a few trips over that area back then. We soon discovered that most of the productive times were around the half tide, flood or ebb. We always timed our trips to coincide with small to medium making tides, just after a good westerly blow, giving the sea a bit action. We mostly fished the Balcary point, that's where Ken got his 40lb-6oz cod from as well.
The day we went across, in December 85, was perfect with the conditions I have just described, armed with black and blow lug, just after the top of the tide, long single flowing trace with 6oz fixed spiders cast out about 80yds. First fish came in about an hour and a half later about 8lb by Ken. On my next cast, I was busy baiting up another trace, when out the corner of my eye, I saw my rod being pulled right over. I was only a few yards from it at the time, and quickly grabbed it before it pulled in

. Did not need to strike it, it was on and heading west with the tide.I was using a North western home built fibre glass rod at the time, and what a great bend it put into the rod.
It probably took around 10 mins to get it to the rock edges, and was a bit of an event, Ken trying to gaff it in the swells.
Once landed, I just sat there laughing and gawping at the size of the thing. Can't remember if we caught any more that day, as I was buzzing like a demented bee.
It was weighed on the scales at Whitley Bay angling club 5-6 hours after hooked.
It went in the angling times, and we both got a bronze angler figure limited edition for our respective catches.
