Fished today

I have had a company fitting my bathroom this week and it got a bit much for me so decided on a days fishing, (they can lock up when they finish and post keys back through letterbox I thought) I was hoping to target dabs. I got some size 1 hooks and made my rigs other day so was all set.

I couldn't decide where I wanted to fish at first but after a good argument with myself I decided the walkway it is, got there just after 9am and surprisingly it was empty.

I got set up and after a bit I got my second ever COD, geraway man its my second ok and it was 3cm bigger than my first cod at 28cm. :red:

I caught a coley of 26cm a bit later on, then a 36cm coley bang on 1lb. I fishing next to a cracking bloke from erm I forget but its a 50 mile trip here and back for him to fish, :o had some good craic and laugh and lovely weather, jesus I never seen one man bring in so many crabs. He was bringing huge ones in 2 at a time haha, he was using wd40 I know to stay away from that stuff lol.

Awwwww man I had a crack off today aswell first timer here man, I didn't have any line wrapped round the end of rod or nowt I always check before casting, so how do these things happen.? Anyway that gave an almighty birds nest that I had to cut out, got set up again then got a good bite tried to bring it in and got snagged, looked at my watch it was 4pm time for home I though.

Baits used were blacks, mackerel, bluey, mussel and squid, I got the coleys with blacks tipped with bluey and the cod with blacks tipped with mackerel. No dabs for me but mr craby next to me caught 1 lol.

Nice sesh mate. When you start getting familiar with using a mult and casting with no problems after a while you just want to put that bit extra into the cast for even more distance, it's the way that extra is put in that makes the difference from nesting and cracking off to sending the lead a long way. I'm not saying it is but it might have been what happened to you today, the cast has to be smooth and progressive. I'm no expert but there will be ppl on here who can advise better on the next stage.

sounds like a nice sesh mate, same happend to me on sunday, got my self size 1 & 2 hooks targeting flattys.
2 codling and a coalie.

was well happy, considering ive blanked for 6 weeks and sunday i landed codling, champion :)

nice size fish to mate, mine was tiny about 10cm :p

Well Pete at least you have caught a few fish this year. good on ya pity about the birds nest tho .never mind as long as you enjoyed it so keep plodding on. lots of luck to come..:D:D:D

when was the last time you put a drop of oil in the bearings?
they can run dry - they throw out the oil eventually, try one or two (max) drops of red rocket fuel. always check your mag setting - its easy to catch the control!
hope these suggestions help.

Thanks for reply lads, as for rocket oil I want to learn to walk before I try to run lol, I have some oil the reel came with like will give it a drop of that. I think as Gordon says it was a case of me trying to put a bit extra into the cast, confidence is a funny thing, looks like I got complacent.

LOL Craig typical eh mate, I have tried for cod all winter 2010 and 2011 and caught every other species apart from cod, try for dab catch cod and coley lol maybe that's an idea, target a doggy I might catch a big cod. :D

just something to try I found out on my greys reels that when i put them in to free spool I was still gettting movement on the spool from side to side and had to readjust the spool tension. I had the same problem with a couple of birds nests a few weeks ago and they are ok now that I have the tension right.

Hopefully if they are going to be 3cm bigger everytime I catch one from now, the sized cod shouldn't take that long. :)

Cheers for info regarding reels lads, I have the mags on just over half atm and it seems fine. I dunno about the tension on the spool though there is a bit of slack but I don't want to tighten the nut up too much cause that can kill the bearings.

In free spool should the lead take line off slowly without causing any nesting, not casting you know just when ya let the lead drop to the ground like.

Lead should drop to the ground like a lead baloon mate, very quickly

The Rocket Fuel might be helpful for you to slow the reel down initially. Think of it like motor oil 10W 40 except the viscosity change is due to the reel turning fast not due to temperature like in a car. This property is called thixotropy, same idea as tomato getting thinner when you shake the bottle.

It was the mags slider somehow moved to 0 mags lol, I only noticed this last night after casting out lead went for miles I was thinking wow its just running and running, with a slight over run at the end. I had a look and the slider was on 0, this must of been the reason I cracked off, note to self check reel before every cast.
