Hi all some advice needed. I want to do some float fishing but not to sure what hook length to use. What is the norm length to use. Am wanting to target pollock.
Use a sliding float . Put a bead on then float then bead then ball weight the bead then tie to a swivel.tie hook length of 1 foot long to swivel. To tie a stop not use a lastic band or a water knot.then you can change depth to what ever you need.
I usually use 2-3 ft of 20lb flurocarbon. If it's not too deep go shorter but find the longer length moves the bait more which is what will usually attract the take.
A useful tip is to tie another stop knot just above the swivel. In the case of a snap-off at the swivel you should get your float back at least. How many floats have we all lost by not doing this ;-)

If you put a stop knot and bead about 4 inches above your weight/swivel this also helps to prevent everything tangling when casting into a wind, you can alter the distance of the stop knot depending on the conditions.
Here,s the set up i use.
The distance between the 2 swivels is longer than the hook length to stop the baited hook coming back over the float when casting.
