Friday from Amble

After stocking up on Morrison's large prawns in Alnwick, hurry before I buy the lot. Thought I'd get a quick few hours in; I left Amble marina around 12:00 and headed across the bay to Alnmouth once more. The sea and weather were just about perfect but a flat calm sea never seems to bring out the fish. I was hoping for a repeat of Wednesdays action but it was a disappointment. Fished the same place but not one Coalie, truly amazing considering the numbers on Wednesday. They can't have all disappeared so I guess they don't feed everyday.

I have now carried out exhaustive sea trials of the Morrison large prawn (£1:99) and can't fault it. After catching a single Mackerel, I cut it into strips and did some experimentation. With a 3 hook Hockie trace and the prawn on the bottom the cod, mainly small, always went for the prawn. I switched the Mackerel strips and prawn round, prawn on the middle hook and Mackerel on the bottom. No difference the cod go for the prawn every time

I'll have to get some worms for another experiment. At the end of a glorious day I ended up with 6 Cod, all around 3lb mark again all full of small crab. One disgorged a small Herring when landed.

It was an absolute pleasure to fish on a flat sea and to not feel 'wobbly' all evening. Long may it last

A great catch again. I am chocka blocka this weekend with kids parties so the next time off will be tuesday for me, I might nip out to check my pots are still intact this afternoon after the sea running this week. I think it will be a left turn at the piers on tuesday!;)

In a previous life I used to keep koi carp , they loved prawns , the pond they were in was big and deep but chrystal clear so they were easy to watch , the water was circulated by a big pump through filters which meant there was a steady flow round the pond , when I fed them prawns I would drop small pieces , one at a time in the pond at the opposite side to where they were , within seconds of the first piece hitting the water the koi knew they were there and got aggitated and started hunting for them, I've no doubt cod are any different.
The fish movement in the sea is a puzzle to me too , when I see huge shoals on the sounder one minute and gone the next I'm convinced they must move around the sea , I have this picture in my mind of sporadic fish in ones and twos here there and everywhere all the time and then these vast shoals of sandeels followed by vast shoals of coalies , herring ,mackerel ,pollock , cod and ling moving around from feeding ground to feeding ground.
I haven't got a clue how it all actually works out there , but I know now if you can find one of those vast shoals , it's a fun days fishing.
