Growler 20/03/11 : Just Chips!

Another delay resulted in us missing the planned saturday launch and the best of the weather, my new (old) fishing car I have bought ( to stop the missus complaining about the loss of her car and the stink!) failed it's MOT on a corroded break pipe so the launch was put back until Sunday.
All went well with the launch and no horror stories! We have snapped a trailers axle before when launching so I am always a bit aprehensive at the ramp, it was made a bit easier this year as well as I put the new car into four wheel drive and drove onto the beach rather than turning around the roundabout and reversing back down. Once in the water all went well and off fishing it was.
Clearing the roads on the way South it was snotty, cold and didn't get any better so we stopped off at the Northern Hills and tried all over, shallow and deep. The fishing was very slow. I managed a solitary bite whilst Micky had a fish on up to midwater before it threw the hook. The water was coloured but not too bad. The drift speed was spot on and we had crab, lug, squid and mackeral for bait.

On a plus point the boat and all electrics went well and thats us all ready to go for the season, shame I am off back to work for 8 weeks next week but by the time I get back the fish should be everywhere! This is the earliest we have ever been off as well so another plus point, a good afternoon at sea anyway. I think it was Norman that told me that the fish show off the Tyne first then Amble not much after so I am looking forward to some good catch reports off the Tyne boys!
Had a loving gaze over an Arvor 215as after we came in with an enclosed wheelhouse, she looks lovely with a 115hp cummins, it would have saved the ice cream headache's I had due to the freezing spray coming over us on the way south!

I will be off this week sometime but I think I will pick my day according to the weather. Well done to everyone who caught on Saturday, another great bag of fish there Arthur! I must admit if the wind wasn't as strong I would have had a go at anchoring over a wreck!
For the first time in my life I found myself jealous of a pouting Tony!:) Hope it tasted ok!

Pleased everything's working well Graham, as to the ice cream heads. An easy fix would be 12"x4ft piece of perspex from B&Q or the nearest glass shop, fastened to the radar gantry with some cable ties. Would make a helova difference.

Ha ha! Ice cream headaches ...... buy a hat:rolleyes: , I was down on Saturday putting fishing stuff on my boat and noticed Growler was still on the hard standing , she was looking nice and clean and neatly anti fouled ....... but still a bit dry lol. Glad you finally got her in the water , shame about the fishing. I had a run out on mine a week or so ago , took a rod and a lure or two but was more for sea trials and plotter familiarising than fishing.
Have to tell you though Graham , even though it was perishing cold and I only had a jumper on ......... I was nice and warm in my cabin:D... apart from my feet for some reason , must buy some thicker socks , don't want to get ice cream feet ache :D
See you out there in a couple of months , I might have the hang of the boat by then and have found some fishies , I'll let you know;)

The perspex may be a plan Arthur! Enclosed wheelhouses are overated!!!!
Have you had any fish yet Ray? It was pretty barren down there on Sunday. Just a quick question as well on how your consumption is coming along with the new bigger boat and outboard? Also how have you found it transporting the petrol to the marina? That won't be a problem soon as there are plans for a tesco's on the braid outside the marina and I would imagine a petrol station as well!
If the waether stays ok I think I will head off for a few hours over low water tomorrow before off to graft.

Graham.

Too busy playing with the boat to do much fishing Graham , I did drop a line over the side a couple of times but never had a touch , I was spending most of my time putting waypoints in the plotter to mark the wrecks out.
The boat came with half a tank of fuel and I've filled her up (135ltrs in total) at 20ltrs a go over a few visits , I had her out for a good few hours and visited a few of my favourite wrecks and did probably 20 miles at a max of 20knots plus the back and forth over the wrecks to plot them properly and only used 20 litres , so I'm happy enough with that , might be a different story when she's run in and I open her up a bit more though :D
I wanted to have a run out tomorrow as well , but I have a hospital appointment so maybe Thursday if the weather is good.
