heating vs Propulsion

I`ve noticed in recent years that it gets rather cool out at sea so i`ve decided to convert my engine to be a big in cabin heater and since i dont really need to go all that fast I`m going to get a small electric powered prop fitted for propulsion ........

its a sign of getting old Norman........some how i cant imagine seeing slinky going any faster than flat out, she only has 2 speeds...fast and stop !!!

Aye bob (good to hear from you) but from november you have to pay full duty on red deisel (unless its for heating purposes - self declared)

It was only a matter of time before the greedy buggers jumped on that one, as we know, they have talking about it for many years now, bet there will be loads of boats for sale when that happens....anyway how are you keeping, ive been down to the marina several times but never seems to be at the same time as you

not been the best of weather bob, down there most weekends for engine run but not been through the lock this year yet............

not be long now though, have they put the fees up again this year ????, same about the red diesel taxes, lets hope Mark and Ell can fill the tank on there new boat but before the increase takes place

either fill the tank of just declare it`s for heating ................ same stuff, same colour and from the same pump, just less cost at the declaration of the user ......

bit silly really

will royal quays still be allowed to sell the red diesel though ???, i would have thought that they would have to change to normal diesel and charge the full price, is the red stuff still about half the price of taxed diesel ??, i bet when the change comes about the charter skippers will feel the pinch, maybe you could get sails on slinky they havent taxed the wind yet!!!! and as we know royal quays gets plenty of that from the wrong direction every weekend or bank holiday

I'd read that one as well, be interesting to see how this new 'law' pans out

spoke to the guy in the garage at winlaton where they have a red pump. He knew nothing of the changes at all and as far as he is concerned will still be selling as is - currently 52p

What `i haven't totally sussed out is who is declaring the duty. The retailer, (ie RQ) or the consumer?? Seems so open to abuse by the reatiler if thats the case - they charge full whack then trouser a fair bit maybe, declaring they've sold loads to commercials??

we've already got a diesel heater on board, but have now also a 130hp 6 cylinder generator!

Aye will be filling our tanks, all 4 of them @100 gallons each (I think). maybe we could stock up and provide a 'bunkering' service 6 miles out!

as another avenue, thought about getting commercial coding. If the vessel is coded you're exempt. whether you use the boat commercially or not - its the vessel that qualifies, not the crew, so no need for commercial endorsements on tickets and the like

read through the coding guidelines on the MCGA, go for something like a simple 3 or 6 mile COP and the requirements aren't excessive and mostly things that are worthwhile doing anyway. So, buy a small liferaft, a few other odds and ends of safety kit and your exempt.

the maddest thing of all is, we'll still be buying red diesel, just paying more. Commercial boats buy red at the rq, so it'll be normal service, I just wonder wether they will insist on charging full whack and expect us to claim back the difference - which wouldn't surprise me with the RQ at all

just been looking at the proposals on the RYA website, the way i see it is that eventually they will make the supplier charge the duty, cant imagine the goverment will trust anybody to make thier own declarations for long

can also imagine suppliers trousering some of the duty as well, as it seems to be based solely on an 'honesty' system, as to what goes in the fuel tanks, whats for heating, whats for running a generator etc

least if we completely fill our tanks it'll keep us going for a while
