Just wondering what people think of Herring as bait?

Fished just down from the caravan site at Oban a canny few years ago and used it. Doggie a chuck mate.

seen a lad using it in a seaham comp a couple of years ago on the blast beach he lobbed it 60yrds and it resulted in a 6lb cod think he came 2nd in the comp
