Hilston and Tunstall
Hilston and Tunstall
Hello,
Hilston is a very good mark in both Summer and Winter. The water is constantly coloured due to the clay cliffs being eroded so fishing in daylight can be very good.
In the Summer months settled weather will see the rays and smoothhounds show with bass possible with some sea movement.
A word of caution, however, the coloured water comes at a price, the area is constantly being eroded by the sea and cliff falls are possible so take care, access points to the beach change from week to week so please take care especially during or after rainfall.
The tide can also reach the base of the cliffs at high water so make sure that you don't get cut off, it's possible to fish from several of the lower parts of the cliffs so take some time to choose your mark.
If you are unsure then maybe the beach at Tunstall is a better mark and offers easier access but because of this it also gets more crowded.
To get to Tunstall take the B1242 and turn off at the sign for the "sand-le-mer" caravan park, leave your car at the site entrance and go to the beach at the boat yard ramp.
For Hilston continue past the turn off for the site and look on your right hand side for a gate past a big pile of old straw/hay. Walk through the gate across the field to the cliffs.
Or you can drive on for about 1/2 mile and the road will come to an end with a concrete barrier across your path, this is where the road has fell into the sea!! Park up and walk along the cliff untill you can find a way to the beach.
If you do decide to go then you must do so at your own risk, so PLEASE, PLEASE take care.
I hope that this has been of some use to you.
Regards Ian.
