How to make cart?

Hi all, i'm hoping someone can shed some light on this, i've been considering making my own cart bait but i'm not sure which part of the crab to use. I popped into Latimers today to try and find out but they said they used all of the meat from the main body and that there was no wastage that could be used as bait as it was only the shell and bone that would be left. So what is it i use and is it only during a certain time of year? Thanks for reading.

Basically hen eating crabs with coral on take all the meat and coral (eat claws urself if u wish) mix then freeze in bait size portions in finger bandage or sumit similar

Thanks for the quick replies guys, i've used cart before but want to try obtaining and making my own so that i know exactly what is in it. I wasn't sure if you used the brown meat from inside the shell or just certain parts of it. Is it just females that can be used or can you use males also? Thanks again.

When a hen crab is at its best for eating, its at its best for Cart.Just before it would peel.
Look for a nice dark crab. You can also check the 2 f@nnies inside the pouch. If they are dark orange its perfect.
If the crab very white and clean, its just peeled and will be empty.

So its just females then, is there a time of year that they are at they're best, i read on here last week that it could be October but the guy in Latimers said it was January? Neither month is really peak peeling time for crabs?

Take the lungs out, same as when freezing peeler, or dressing a crab to eat, then mix it all together.

Heres a question though...... wait for it......

If you take out all the toxic bits, make sure theres no shell in, put it into skins fit for human consumption, are you not left with bait for man and cod too? I think you are!

I thought it was eggs off hen crabs and meat from under shell mixed together

Its the red berries inside the hen crab that makes the best Cart. You mix them with the rest of the insides.
Boil and eat the legs and nippers....
May and June is when the crabs are at there fullest, before they peel.
This time of year most of them will have peeled.

thanks everyone, gonna go for mooch about the rocks and have a looky see what i can find. By the sounds of it i will be getting some crab for sarnies not bait!

Ive just converted 45kg of live hen eaters into cart...

every single crab was chocka with coral. Ive been waiting all summer for the crabs to be full of coral. And ive had the added bonus of dealing with people who deal with crab every day.

Now through october is prime cart making time so im lead to believe from the people in the area who invented the stuff.

people seem to have varied opinions on this topic and im not experinced enuff to say anyone is right or wrong but goin off what ive seen and heard for my self

now is as good a time as any. My crabs were sourced in scarbrough maybe its a bit different up here

Now is prime time for the hens to be full of coral (eggs), Just lift the back off and scoop out everything inside, the lungs will stay with the bit that pulls away so no worrys. If you like the claws, put them in a bag and boil them, enjoy.Hope this helps.
