whats the best compound for stick the thing down with, slow set epoxy (no air bubbles) I thought about, but not sure aboput longevity with dirty salty water swill around occasionally. GRP resin?? (thats what the old tx was mounted with, or I wondered wether milliput my be a good substitute - easy to work with, no air bubbles and pretty resistant to water

any pointers??

the little \'un asked me why I didn\'t just drill a big hole in the bottom and hang it underneath by the wires!! decided against that one
 
try silicon Mark, thats what we used on Dave Masons, but cut the whole end off the tube so you get a dollop the thicknes of the tube then push the transducer into that it works fine on his boat....be carefull if you use resin though as it heats up when its curing and could damage the transducer

cheers chaps. The TX was in hull already but the wiring was iffy. the old un was set in about a pint of resin! took some removing, and thought I\'d delaminate a chunk of the hully, but whover put it in didn\'t clean the area up very well so the bond wasn\'t that strong. I suppose at least with silicon you\'ve more chance of getting it back out

how thick a layer of silicon under the TX, just enough to stick it or a bit of a cushion??
 
Ah, The infamous transducer mounting job !!!,

Nearly on par with the \'prop cleaning job\' or even the \'tidy up the life ring 5 minutes job\'.

If I remember rightly the silicone was plan B,

Ask Mr Mason why we had to use plan B ;) Doh !, Play dough to be exact.

In fact Holly and Finn ended up with plan A to take home with them :o :D

Just chop the full end of the silicone tube of, The whole end not just the nozzle part, then empty the full tube out in one or two pulls of the trigger, push the transducer half way down into the silicone in one push not twisting or turning it as it goes in, so no air bubbles are trapped.

White silicone was used on Dave\'s boat, but not the pearlised one :P

the bairns have still go it, and if I can find them I\'ll scan the pictures they frew of the \'nice play doh man\' and pit them up
 
Not much to tell really :P , but I know this man who bought some \"Play dough\" to test his transducer in various positions before dogging it down . It failed of course in front of a very large audience much to their delight . This would of been excused but immediately followed a previous incident where the said \"man\" painted a lifering with toplac paint only to wait 6wks for it to dry . The incident of the painted prop is already well documented and the \"man\" wrongly thought all had been forgotten ( No f......g chance ).

Moral of the story , if you make any mistakes , make sure no f.....r is watching ;)
 
Dave , I think it was me who said I used play dough (plastercine in my day) to test my transducer ............... but i did say if you remember that I used it to build a dam and fill it with water to put the tranxducer in LOL :)
 
also DONT buy the expensive one with metal flakes in it.......tranducers dont like it for some very strange reason....hee hee
 
I used BluTak as a temporary bond while on sea trials, gues what, the temporary bond lasted 2 years ! ! ! It must be said, my bilge was dry.

Don\'t know if this is any good to you but this is how I set the transducers in hull.

Throw a bucket of water in the sump and get someone to hold the transducer under water whilst running the boat flat out. Move the transducer to get the best signal and then mark the location with pencil.

Dry out the hull and roughen the area and transducer face with with 40 grit paper. Degrease with acetone, it is the only way to ensure a good bond with the wax contained in the flowcoat on the hull. I use Araldite and mix it with a cutting action to ensure no air bubbles. A good dose on the hull and press the transducer down into it. I use a couple of small zip lock plasic bags filled with dry sand to pack round the transducer to stop the epoxy running out and hold the transducer at the correct angle.

So far, touch wood, I havn\'t had one fail with this method. I was warned against the silicon method due to it acing as a shock absorber when the transucer pings. I was told it reduces the signal so erring on the side of caution have allways used epoxy.
 
sounds great. need to get a longer garden though in order to run the boat flat out though!, also need to adjustt for being 1200 foot up in the pennines

went the silicon route so we\'ll wait and see what happens when it sees the water again, least with silicon it\'ll be easier to get back out if its gone pear shaped
 
Aye mark thats true, mind you I always use epoxy as Chris said, but it`s a one way ticket, if it ever does not work then you`ll never get if off (in one piece :) )
 
:) In the good old days, (circa 1987, Alaska 500 etc) I used to use \'Plasic Padding\', green colour \'type elastic\', or the harder grey worked best but removals had to be a very carfull process. Seem to remember Lowrance used to supply a sachet of the grey pp as standard, not sure about now though?

These days, the only way for me is \'throght the hull\'? Big boats means thick hulls, especialy the Cygnus 35 that I am waiting for ! ! Soon be here, last week in June??? The past 6 months have been so frustrating :hallucine: I think I have been fishing 3 times since December, and not to be able to get out now :casstet: The bass and smoothounds have come in big time, looks like being a good year? There are some big cod with the bass on the off shore banks (25 miles)

Need to be patient, \'dont spoil the ship . . . etc\'. I need a month anti foul, anodes and generaly check her out. So this summer will be very low key, most trips will be close to home whilst getting used to the handling of what is effctivly a comercial fishing boat minus the nets, plus a large trawler yacht style wheel house/cabin. September/October we get some large double figure bass off shore, I shall give them a go, along with early cod and some very big channel whiting.

Hope you guys had the good weather we (Felixstowe) had yesterday (Sun) SW wind force 2 or less. The boats went miles off. Looking out the window, looks like today is not bad either.

update:

I think I found the world\'s first tube of non-set silicon

been there a fortnight, and apart from a thin skin on top of it the stuff is as soft as when it came out of the tube

I was tempted to leave it and see If I could break a certain lifering drying time record, but figured there might be trees growing in the cockpit by the time it hardens

hard cash and Sikkaflex seems to have done the trick
