Keen sea fishing learner

Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to sea fishing. Over the last year I have been buying various bits of gear (sonik 3 rod, slosh multiplier, headlamp, stand, terminal tackle etc) and am now looking fowards to taking up sea fishing more seriously. I have been learning about new fishing marks to try, various rigs to make and different areas to collect my own bait which I enjoy. I haven't caught anything of any size yet but am looking forwards to trying to get a cod or two when the summer run arrives. I know that when fishing snaggy areas you can lose weight after weight. I am looking to start making my own weights to keep the cost down when loosing so many and have most of the equipment needed. Can anyone tell me if the heat off a garden chiminia would be enough to melt the lead before I begin to make my own or advise me on something better to use.

Any advice would be greatly recieved. Dandin1o.

Welcome to the fourum, wishing you good luck with you fishing.
I used to heat the lead on the gas cooker its not something i would recomend to anyone in this day and age so i will leave your question to the the exsperts and stay safe when you handle molten lead.:)

Been making leads for years and there is no way the heat off a chiminea will be hot enough, just buy a camping stove, works a treat.

Dunno if theres a store near you but you can get stoves and refills from B&M stores. no idea how much they are but I know they'd be cheap enough!

Thanks for the advice everyone. I have an old camping stove in the garage and the gas refills are cheap enough. Will be giving lead making a go very soon.

Regards,

Dandin1o

Depends how fierce the fire is in the chiminea,I'll take a pic of ours over the weekend and you can judge for yourself if its hot enough:eek:

Chain or Socks

Alternative to leads - old chain links if fishing over snaggy ground - OR - get some of your old socks and fill them with sand / pebbles - loads on the beach and cost you nowt - when snagged the sock rips and releases the contents - saves losing all your terminal gear or a fish - only drawback is the distance you are able to cast - Basically only suitable for Short lobs over snaggy ground - you can tell I'm an old timer - eh !!

What if like me all you're old socks already have holes in them. :D

Probably not as old as mine mate - probably the smell that attracts the fish - but your feet tend to get cold - and wet if you don't lose them and have to put them back on. lol - Seriously - in the 70's fishing the barrier on Roker Pier, you knew you were in tackle hungry ground and used owt to get your rig in the water - spark plugs, nuts, bolts, basically owt - Grip leads & Breakaways were a rarity, clip downs, gemini links etc, etc, etc, were not even invented. How times have changed regards terminal tackle etc (for the better i think) - still enjoy fishing as much now as I did then - catching a fish is the bonus

Snaggy ground, use junk as mentioned, most garages that do services will normally give you any amount of old spark plugs just to get rid of them.

Making your own, just take care to ensure good ventilation, use sensible safety gear and don't rush yourself. Takes a little practice to get used to filling the mold and get the lead to the right temperature so don't feel down when you end up with some duffers that end up back in the pot :)

Pick up a spinning rod, fixed spool and a mix of spinners and lures for the summer months when the mackeral are about, easy target and good fun. The rod and reel will also be canny for chucking smaller leads and floats with lighter gear for flatties, coalies, whiting etc I've fished big rockpools in the summer with my lightest gear for blennies, butterfish, granny fish and owt else in them just for a bit of fun on a sunny day :D
