Went over to the Kirkcudbright area last Tuesday for a 7 night stopover...took the fishing gear with me as it would have been the height of bad manners of me to leave it at home

We were staying in one these bad boys
the view from our veranda
To be honest I didn't get the chance to fish as often as I'd have liked as the weather was variable with strong winds gusting east to west all the time...however on the day it relented slightly and the sun came out I grabbed my chance so I headed to rugged coastline south of Borness
Across the fields, past the cows and out into the wild heath I was lucky enough to witness two red deer in the wild salt marshes

apologies for video quality but I promise they are deer
Anywho to task in hand I clambered the rocks trying ascertain the best spot...the manxman was cut off as the tide was in and I didn't fancy getting wet so I veered about 1/4 mile to the right to a promising looking skeer that I could fish into deep water
I'd taken only my flattie rod and a very light spinning rod so I was limited to the type of fishing I could do - I did cast out a legered sandeel to try for doggies but after a while of losing a couple of rigs I gave up and reverted to the spinner in hope of macky, coalies or even a nice pollack...
After a while I was catching nowt on the plain spinner so I added a couple of daylites above it in the hope of triggering a reflex from any fish out there...it was only my third cast and retrieve then BANG...at first I thought I snagged in the weed beds but my rod buckled over almost double as a feisty something hung on to the end of my line...I had a bit of a scary moment when I had to tighten the drag on the cheap reel but he fish stayed on...it gets to the surface it's only a prime scrapping schoolie bass
another scary moment was the five foot lift to my feet
but I got it
Measured at 40.5cms...tantalisingly short of NFSA size...but what a scrap tho on the super light spinning rod
The tide was ebbing at this poing so I changed marks and headed back the manxman rock and was able to get back on this time...

I tried spinning at various points for another hour or so with no further luck so I decided to give up and head back to the car

I came, I saw and I conquered...not a great array of species but in the short few hours I managed I was able to enjoy the hunt (and capture) of a prime species of fish
Funnily enough I was in a good mood on the drive back to the campsite

Tis a spot I will deffo be heading back to in the future

Cheers
Tony
