Heading up to the Kyles of Bute in a couple of weeks time, just for the week, taking our lads Avon Searider 4M rib:

for as much fishing as we can get in.;)

Fancying a go at lure fishing for pollock.

Any advice on decent marks up there anyone?

cheers

Steve

I’ve not fished round there so cannot offer any advice for specific marks. For Pollock, you get better fish in deeper water working over rocks, wrecks and pinnacles. The charts show a deep area mid channel just north of the narrows at Tighnabruaich. I think that you can launch close to there. The bottom is marked as muddy but the east side may be rocky.

The other area that looks to be worth a try is by the red can on the east side of the Ardlmount point.
I’ve kayaked round that area; even though it looks like a sheltered sea loch, the conditions aren’t to be underestimated as a sea easily builds with the wind whipping down the kyles and a strong tide flows north. Watch out for the submarine exercise area mid channel too.

Good luck.

Thanks very much for the advice Kevin:)

We're staying at Carry Farm, just down from Tighnabruaich.

I've been looking at the chart, for wrecks and pinnacles etc but was hoping someone might have some experience of the area;)

The info regarding the tides and wind for example,is priceless, thanks again.

all the best

Steve

Steve, as has been said the "narrows" are good pollock grounds. Try the Colintraive, side just north of the village, close in. Chance of some decent sea trout to be had further up in Loch Riddon. Also directly opposite Tighnabruaich Pier on the Isle of Bute side, again close in for pollock. Plenty of mackerel should be there in a week or so. Dogfish are prevalent too. Also you could try Portavadie, a good few rock marks near the marina.

Kames Hotel does lovely bar food, as does An Lochan which does great, but expensive, seafood. Lovely part of the world to fish. We are going on Saturday for a shore session, weather permitting. PM me if you need anymore info.

Off the point on the left foreground. Or in the bay between the two headlands.

No problem. Looking forward to the report.

We will be on the pier on the 29th June, weather permitting. If you are in Tighnabruaich, come and say hello.

Very late trip report!

Very late trip report!

I was sure I'd updated this thread when we came back but I obviously didn't so here goes:

Well we went, took about 5 hours to get there, as we went via loch long etc.

Lovely quiet place, very scenic.

Never even had a bite.

Too early in the year I suppose, but the trawlers and scallop boats scraping backwards and forwards just a couple of hundred yards out, all night don't do anything to improve matters:(

Mind you, the beach at Carry Farm is teeming with bait, including massive mussels-some 5-6" long!- worms, cockles, clams and even razor clams for the picking.

The camping was only £5 per person per night and the showers were okay for an extra £1 a go:)

The actual pitching area was crap, with huge ruts and 2ft high rough grass.

but for a fiver a night?;)

I took a load of photo's and I'll put some up at some point eventually:red:

cheers

A shame you did not even get a bite Steve, but as you say, the trawlers have completely buggered up the whole of the Clyde.

It is a scandal that the government just does not care about. I had hoped that with our own parliament things would change, but no such luck.

This is why we come to the NE!!

To be fair, we were concentrating more on getting sorted out with the boat, three adults trying to fish in a 4m rib doesn't really work, especially when you add a little terrier into the mix:D

We took a run up to the islands, where apparently some nice pollock had been caught a few days previously, but alas, nowt:confused:

The trawlers/scallop dredgers were going non stop, slowly backwards and forwards. They were turning around just about at the tank slip, then heading back down the Kyle again.

I reckon we'd have found fish if we'd had a sounder but otherwise it was just trying "likely spots".

Our lad seems keen to return but I don't think I'll be going back;)
