I've spear fished for flatties in my early teens, 6-8' bamboo cane with a big nail whipped onto the end with a barb cut into it with a hacksaw. Used to walk around upto waist depth in front of S/Sluice harbour when the tide was out - spot a nice big flatty and slowly bring the "spear" down towards it then a quick jab and it was caught. Was canny since you could be completely selective about what you took.
