Bad luck John at least you were out for the day.
John not being an expert on fly fishing i take it the seasons are up over the winter.(I was out on a boat sea fishing last Sat and things out there were also not so good).
When does the new season kick in for fly fishing.
Northumbria have extended this season until the end of November.
Is this for more cash ?.
Guys up Derwent say they want the resevoir to be fished out as they do not over winter very well.

Hi Mick, I always fish thru' the winter as there are some very mild days that allow you to get out and wet a line.
With the water getting colder and insect life being scarce the fish start a bit of Fry Bashing and this is when the lure type patterns come into play. There is no particular pattern that is a sure thing, just experiment with your fly's and fish at various depths until you contact fish, gauge your depths by counting down, vary the speed of your retrieves and fan cast to cover as much water as possible.
Buzzers fish the whole year thru' so carry a few patterns in your box, and to complicate matters a bit more, it is not unusual to catch a fish or two on top of the water.
If you intend fishing the winter months, check that the fishery is open as some close for a while as the owners need a break and some of the smaller waters ice over.
Maybe long winded Mick but I hope this helps.

Mick, Rainbows most definetly take dry flies unless you are referring to winter fishing when it's not the best tactic. Insects make up the bulk of their diet although they do feed on fry and some trout will feed on other trout (Ferox). They most definetly rise to flies it's a big part of stillwater angling and definetly the most exciting method IMO. I fish mainly dry flies even when I shouldn't be because I am rubbish!

Nothing to stop you Mick, this method is used by a lot of anglers.
Tie on your lure, then attatch a buzzer Newzealand style and it is believed the fish will come to the attracter fly (lure) and if it turns away it will go for the buzzer.
Newzealand style is tying a length of leader, say a couple of feet or so to the bend of your lure fly and this leaves your buzzer trailing behind.
If you are fishing a fly on top of the water you can also use this method, deadly if the fish are showing in the higher reach's of the water.
Just experiment Mick and you will be surprised how successful you will become.
