18 lb shockleader!?!? - totaly irresponsible unless you\'re fishing by yourself and no-one is within 1/2 mile - and I don\'t care how good the line is claimed to be.

:o In this sport you do not take chances!

Meant to add that I am currently using a large drum of Ron Thompson 60lb shock which I bought form Billy - sorry Aunty Wainright - and it is proving an excellent buy. 60lb BS but it is orange which I prefer cause you can see it in the surf when reeling in - especially at night which to me is a major plus.

18lb line....??.......with NO shockleader...????? :o :o :o

Flippin\' \'eck :exclam:

I use 18lb line for weak rotter links :exclam: :exclam:

hi all, hav,nt realy got time to go into this as computer is acting up no it has,nt been hit by an 8 ounce lead, how many of you no what an overhead cast or overhead thump is ,it has to be the safest cast possible ,before critising find out what the dangers are in a overhead thump.something else coming to mind here been fishing for years read a lot of sea angler magazines enjoyed alan yates articles you will have to go back a while now but read how he fishes into the teeth of a gale interesting regards john

got to say i agree with bri h theres no way i would want to be anywhere near someone casting 8oz on 18ilb line

I always stick by the general rule of 10lb per ounce of lead. Accidents do happen and I wouldn\'t want 8oz of lead either flying at me or dropping out of the sky on to me!

I did not see the article by Alan Yates a while ago but I would like to see him come up with the same thing now.
I would agree it is the safest cast possible (It is the cast that I use a lot of the time), but I would never do it with 18lb line. That has one day got to be a recipe for disaster mate.
It doesn\"t matter how good you are at anything, just mistime it a bit then the safety thing goes out the window.
I have also been fishing for years and I will admit that I tried things that would make your hair curl now.
When I first started fishing there was no such thing as shock leader and we would brag about how far we could chuck a lead without it snapping.
I bet you anything that Alan Yates would not advocate fishing without a shock leader now.

Jim.

Sorry Mike I didn\"t get to your post mate. I fish with rods that are suitable for five or six ounce weights. It does not matter which one I use I always use a Sixty pound shock leader unless I am lobbing it into the rocks on my thirty pound straight through gear.
As sless has said at least twice on here when you are spending a fortune on gear, why would you want to scrimp on probably one of the most important parts.

Jim.

Shockleader doubles up as a great \"rubbing\" leader as well. If you\'re hoying leads out a distance over rough ground, after big fish then 10lb per oz shocker gives you a bit of confidence.

Crazy, irresponsible and down - right dangerous.........nothing less.

Don\'t care HOW long you\'ve been fishing....... bad practice is still bad practice :exclam:

hi all, fishing myself i use 80lb leaders sometimes if the fish are shy and if i am down on my own on the beach nobodt else down i will scale down. i would scale right down to catch fish ONLY and ONLY if no one else was about ridiculas to say iresponsible and dangerous overhead casting with 18lb line, just an afterthought how many people check there leaders any swing at all i am talking about here after every cast totaly irresposible if you dont i for one DO, and my fishing is early morning sessions with very few people about ,remember this next time fishing in crowded areas agree ell leaders for rubbing line used to do this for tope fishing regards john
