Hi first year at salmon fly fishing and as I can't afford the money or time to fish Scotish water so the kit has to be put away has any body got advice on line care and storage over the long months ahead

Hi Tommy,

Best thing to do is take the line off the spool (tight coils may cause the line to kink). You can give it a good clean with a clean cloth and rub it with Snowbee Line slick (presuming its a floating line).

To store, hang it up in wide loose coils somewhere out the way where its not going to get damaged!

Buy some plasticiser from the tackle shop. I've got some lines 6 years old. Annual dose of plasticiser keeps them supple and prevents them cracking.
Plastic car trim dressing does the same job.

Thanks for the replies I thought there might be some neat gadget to coil the line and store it but will have to make something like a frame and breathable lightproof wallet I have seen a few items for old silk lines so might copy them. I have a cleaner I used during the season so will treat and polish the line before I put it away

i use for my line garden hose plastic hanging brackets.

they come in a semi circle buy two and put one upside down the other on the wall in the shed or garage - simply wind your line around these and there are no kinks, tight coils etc - you can get more than one line on them also.

i think i got mine from either B&Q or wicks.

I just give mine a good clean and leave them on the reel been doing it for years and never had a problem

Why not try an old bycycle wheel to store your line/s, I have done this for ages with no problems.
As per some of the previous posts, clean and treat your line/s before storage.
