Have heard and read various comments about various brands of line...

Is there a difference between some brands:question: if so what is it:question: and why is it:question:

Must admit i buy the cheapest.
What with snags,nests etc the line gets replaced often anyway.
Some will say that some lines can help or worsen your casts,but i have never found in real fishing situations that it is a factor.
It might be on a casting field but i have my doubt as to just how relevant they are.

I swore by Ultima red Ice and used it for years (30lb), but had a bad batch last year and it kept causing crack offs. Couldn't get down to Amble to get some more so went to Jobsons in Alnwick and bought some of the Shakespeare specimen 30lb and had no probs with it so am still using it now. Great strength and abrasive qualities. Only time I've lost line was this weekend when I twice got a half a ton of kelp on and it couldn't cope with it and snapped!
Still had half a spool and continued to fish and caught two, biggest 6 1/2lb.

Best line i ever bought was Yo-zuri from the USA top quility line,you can still obviously buy it as they are a well known State side company however I bought another few spools and it was'nt quite the same but still usable.The price including shipping was very reasonble.
I use Red Ice and Big Game now

Just make sure the diameter isnt too thick as this will make it a nightmare to cast as it leaves the spool like copper wire "birdsnests galore" other drawback is that it will catch the tide/current more making bite detection more difficult to spot.

Berkley trilene / big game........some brands are too stretchy, so when you get fast,by the time you get the bottom end free, the mid section of line is shot, then when you give it some welly it flares up. so it's best to buy a low stretch line with a high resistance to abraision. they are a bit more expensive but you wont lose as much gear and wont snap dragging a goodun through the rough. hope this helps

Well as far as the tough stuff goes then Berkely trilene or big game is great ,pre-stretched etc . but for smaller diameters then Ultima F1 is the best I've come across . Tony if you need any F1 just let me know ,I've a drum of it that I won in Frasers comp that you can spool off .

Ultima distance in 30lb, top stuff i reckon and at £8 per spool i think its well worth it, just a thought though, would the "cheap stuff" be worth the heartache if you lost that fish of a lifetime just because you saved a few quid on line?

The red Ice was about £6 per spool (granted not dear) but the shakespeare Specimen I am using was about £3 and I've pulled half the sea bed up with the stuff!
