Great forum guys
Can i ask what strength main line is commonly used , what strength line on traces/rigs and what strength shock leader lines and how long should shock leader be .
I know they will be all different but i would like an idea

For mixed to heavy ground I use 35-40lb main line 20lb for clean ground and 60lb for my hook snoods

I use 30lb str8 thru( for the kelp) suffix tritanium then 80lb shock leader for main body of pulley rig with a 30/35lb for the hooksnood, might sound quite heavy butwen u in the kelp it does help topull it through. Normally stick with the same for mixed beaches to cope with big boulders etc hope thishelps

Use 30lb diaiwa sensor with a 60lb shock leader with 10 turns of shocke. I use shock leader on my pulley rigs aswell and 30lb on my hook snoods. U can vary then lenghts of your pulley rigs it upto u how long or short u want

A lot can depend on where your fishing I usually for beach work use 20lb main line with 60lb shock leader the rough stuff its 30to 40lb str through rigs 60lb rig body with 30lb snood lengths

I use 24lb Sufix Tritanium with a 60lb shock leader approx. 8 turns when line through rings. This does for beaches the Tyne and most piers, sometimes I use a longer leader if I feel it is needed , say on Blyth pier when there are not many places to get down to land a larger fish, (this 24lb Sufix stuff is very strong and is not bust easily). 37lb Sufix Tritanium straight through for the rough stuff with 30lb hook snoods and rotten bottoms for leads (usually breakout leads).

Clean beaches / clean ground pier shots .35mm (15lb - 19lb) mainline, 80lb leader, 80lb rig body, 30lb black amnesia hook length. Shock leader twice the rod length plus six turns on the spool, may go longer if I need to lift up a pier wall like off the end of Shields.

Been using 66lb power pro (.36mm, slightly bigger than most 15lb mono) with an 80lb mono leader and rig body, 50lb hook length for mixed - rough ground work on my Saltist 20 and 525 Mag and for me it has worked really well. Minimal tackle loss and still casts a long way if I need to.

In to really rough ground where I don't need to cast far I've been using 100lb braid straight through and mostly end up pulling the lead out of snags before anything snaps

I use similar strengths as already mentioned but as Stewart said go longer with your shock leader when fishing from piers, it's always good to get a few turns on the reel if you catch a good size fish before it starts the lift,

So am i right in saying the shock leader shoud be literaly from the lead/hook (rig ) all the way back to reel with 6 or so turns on reel , at your longest cast . In effect you are fishing only using your shock leader . Possibly 100m required

Twice the length of your rod plus a few turns approx 25/26ft on a 12ft rod, this is when you're ready to cast and not after you've cast out, link or swivel on the end then your terminal tackle(rig) tied or bought however you like. 60-80lb main body with lighter snoods(hook lengths)

I think it means that if you are set up, ready to cast, with your rig dangling at the end of your rod, you'll have about 6 to 8 turns of shock leader on the reel spool.

I'd think no more than a few metres or maybe a couple of rod lengths?( depends on how big the retrieve ratio on the reel is I guess)

When I fish Shields pier, I use 24lb main line with enough 35lb line as a leader, to allow about 8 turns onto my reel before starting the lift up the wall.
