Lads - I'm heading up to Etive next year in June. We are going to do the self drive boats and shore fishing. Would really appreciate any advice from people on what the position is up there with the fishing:
- What sort of lead do I need to take for the boat fishing?
- What are the tides like - strong? or ok?
- Advice on rigs etc and tactics - shads? hokkais? pirks?
- Best baits?
- Any recomendations on self catering accomodation?

Also lads if you can recomend any spost to fish that would be great - boat or shore.

Thanks

James

Have been going to loch etive myself for the last 3 years.

Would recommend using 12 or 14oz sinkers, as when the tide gets underway its pretty strong. The times I have been, have always used Dougs self drive boats, from where you start off on the boats, if you head right you will find an area known as the quarry just round the bend on left hand side, its not far, if you drift or put the anchor down in the centre, you get all sorts from there, cod, ling, lsd, whiting, Pollock etc have never caught anything massive from there, biggest being around 4lb.

I found using pink hokkais or daylights tipped with mackerel tended to work best. If you carry on for a good 20-30 mins drive past the quarry heading inland, you get into spurdog territory, the water is very deep and just drift in the middle of the loch, glow in the dark hokkais work canny tipped with squid.

If you go left when you launch off on the boats and go just around the corner, there are some yellow boys, tie up to one of them and this is a great spot to get thornback ray, use a long trace with a big chunk of mackerel and leave your line nice and slack, even let the fish take your line, to make sure they get a good hold of it.

Bait wise, av experimented with just about everything and found the best baits are mackerel, blueys and squid, tried worms a few times and wasn't get any joy, same goes for peeler crab as well.

Straight across from where you launch is the spot for mackerel if they are in the loch, but havnt had much success in getting many, have heard that them tiny sabiki hook rigs are meant to work but havnt tried myself.

hope this is of some use for ya.

Tanks Sean - great.

Out of interest were you using Braid or mono?

I think I am going to head up around June - Is that a good time of the year or not?

Thanks

James

No problem, I used braid, June should be a good time, I went beginning of July this year and it had all the species there, although the mackerel were still scarce.

Its a great loch if your on the species hunt, but havnt caught anything massive of yet.

no its not very snaggy, hardly lost anything, only time you loose gear is when you drift passed bouys, rigs get caught on ropes under the water. But had no trouble anywhere else.
