Was out for few hours on the tyne today, had afew small codling and a couple coalie. was bringing in rod when quiet, thought id hooked sumit decent and missed the bite. turned out to be a rig from sunday night with a flounder on it, flatty returned hungry but well. Anybody else got any tales like that one:o:o

I was fishing smiths docks once left side of one of them big lochs and another angler was fishing the right side of the loch i got a cracking bite started reeling in and i noticed the other angler doing the same i though he has my line or i have his kept winding and the lines drew together but there was a fish on i wondered if it was his or mine it ended up being a 1lb flounder with both our hooks clean in each side of its mouth we had a chuckle about it and the fish went back he said thats half a fish each i will always remember that day : )

i had a not so lucky fish at church bank it was a whitting hooked never seen the bite but when i got it up it was dead with no eyes and half a tail  prob hooked itself then crabs had a feast on it

I done the same thing had 2 rods out my first rod had a huge overrun line in my face job was busy sorting it out which took the best part or 45 mins baited it up cast out brought my second rod in and there was a dead codling with half a face missing and no eye all its fins were gone i felt so bad for the poor little thing :(

Don't know how long a hook takes to rust and breakdown once in a fish but I'm sure the little flounder would of been released from the rig causing it little or no harm. As for being lucky?

when i was a bairn back in liverpool i was fishing the mersey on the wallasey side and i done the same thing as you mate. I was reeling in and then felt some weight, it turned out to be a rig with an eel on the top hook and a small dab on the bottom. The dab was dead but the eel was returned after id untangled it. It still had some kick in it so im guessing it was ok.

Similar thing happened to me... except there was only me and the flattie involved.
I had a 2 hook flapper rig on with 3/0 hooks and pulled in a flattie about a pound, so not very big, but with both hooks right inside its gob! greedy sod! Its mouth didn't look big enough for 1 hook nevermind 2! :D

All these replies only confirms my thoughts about whether or not fish feel pain.In short my answer would be "NO" If a fish feels pain when it has just been stabbed in the mouth with a fish hook............why would it want to continue feeding ? Can't be in that much pain that it overides it's hunger.
Had a similar experience on Seaham S pier years ago. Got a bite, hooked the fish, but it got snagged up on the way in. Got my sinker back, but the hook length and fish had broke free. Next cast...........another bite, hooked the fish and this time landed it (a codling about 2 lbs) went to get the hook out, and my previous hook length was still in it's gob with the worms still wriggling. It was definitely my previous hook trace. That fish had been hooked and dragged about 20 yds in, then was snapped off, but still was not in that much distress that it did,t want to continue feeding.
Might start a debate here, but does anyone else have any views as to whether or not fish feel paain ?
Having stated my view I still kill a fish as quickly as possible if I'm going to keep it.
