Yesterday me and 3 of me mates went up to dunstanburgh castle. Got there about 10:30 started setting up both spinning rods and rods for feathering.weather was over cast and the sea a bit choppy with a slight wind in your face ,Perfect we thought. Straight away 1 was caught on a spinner before the rest of us had set up ,so then as u can imagine we were rushing to wet a line .Some of us used feathers and first casts 3-4 mackeral ,it was like this for about an hour nd a half lunking them in till we were aching from bringing them in .must of had about 40-50 by then, so some still decided to spin for a bit sport but me and another decided just to chuck a bait out and sit down for a while (the oldest of the bunch). Mind u it was a while, not 1 bite in 2 hours with 3 rods .We had crab rag sandeels and plenty of fresh macky. Very snaggy down there.
A few more people had turned up by then some fishing off the cliffs at the top catching wrass and a few came down where we were spinning for the mackeral, they seemed to catch a few. So we started feathering again and it was the daylights that worked the best. we were casting out about 100yds +, tighting the line as soon as it hit the water and just letting it drop ,after a few seconds you could feel them knocking .We didnt let it go sraight to the bottom to sink and draw just cos 1 did and got snagged everytime .Packed up around 3:30 and headed back for that long walk back that seems like 10 miles when u've all got 15lb + of fish and your gear. But i think in total between the 4 of us we had over 100 mackeral ,chucked a load of them back like, possibly could of had more but thought we'd leave some for you guys. Anyone going up there be carefull of 2 things. 1 .the rocks when wet are deadly and 2. watch out for the seals ,1 rod got snapped and we seen them chasing in the fish on our lines.
