Its a shame as a newbie nobody is giving u any tips. Mackerel is a dirty word on fishing forums. It's a shame. For best results go at first light with full sun , flat sea, no wind...High tide. you willl catch them if they're there on spinners or feathers. Fish with light tackle for the most fun

I've been 3 times this year and they seem a bit thin on the ground atm (I've had 7 mackerel in 3 sessions, 5 of those were in a 5 hour session), hopefully the numbers improve over the next couple of weeks. I don't know if its the hitty missy weather or the massive pod of dolphins or if its the commercial fishing starting to show its ugly head on shore stocks, but there isn't many about right now.

Anyway the pier is best first and last light, flat calm weather westerly preferable so a flat sea too, off the end with daylites if you're stocking the freezer, it doesn't matter if its high or low tide if they're there you'll catch them. Low tide obviously a bit more snaggy so don't let it sink much, remember they are mid to surface hunters. Distance sometimes needed but you'll find out how close they are, sometimes after casting 50-80 yards (yes I don't have super powers of 200 yrd casts :D)your winding in and you'll be surprised how many times they'll be 10 yards out under the wall.

If its for sport you can catch them pretty much the length of the pier, same as above low water is snaggy and if you let it sink too much you'll lose more.
