a friend of mine does a bit of freshwater loch fishing from a boat and has asked me to post this on the site to see if anyone can help he,s float fishing using a bubble float he says he,s getting huge problems when reeling in (he,s using a fixed spool) and the line is causing huge birdnests on his reel blowing up etc he,s using the best memory free line but no change he,s fishing behind the boat should he be fishing of the side? what causes this is it current? obviously this doesn,t happen to me when i,m dragging a 6oz gripper through the water can anybody help?

yeah,gogs is right.when I go reservoir fishing for trout I sometimes use a bubble float with a swivel at each hole to be on the safe side.Normally I use a slider or an antenna float.

BTW,they are just bog standard clip swivels,one to attach the bubble,or to change the size.One to change the trace length.

Could be the bairing on the bail arm not turning round on the retrieve - this would / or could cause the line to be retrieved in a corkscrew fashion. hope this helps
