where on our coastline would you say it would be safe to eat mussel and limpet?, from Boulmer upwards?

Geordie, yous them when I was a youngin in the target when the flat rock was covered in mussel,and ya had nee money for bait,coleys yous to go mad for them.if you scraped the mussel off the rock you also got rag worm behind it.

aye, iv'e had a good few fish on limpet off the rocks when bait has been running low, the reason i ask is that i have just come back from crete. a local lad we met there took us to the most fantastic cove and he was taking them off the rocks and he was saying that they are nice in a bit of lemon juice so i know he and his mates eat them so wondering if i could do the same off our coast. talking about this cove, he also got us half a bag of sea salt flakes which is now nicely drying off at home here. the water there was also so clear which was fantastic to swim in with the mask and snorkel. After getting back and telling my english mate who has lived out there for 18 year, he told me about an underwater cave in the same area where he dives and harpoon fishes. on his last dive in this cave he came across two grouper fish around the 15 to 20lb mark he has tried and failed to catch. i can't wait to go back next year and explore the place some more.

I’ve eaten them from Budle bay, anywhere away from bigger estuaries should be OK. Better to wait until the winter months for the shellfish though.
I’ve tried most raw baits except worm and peeler, who else has tried eating limpets? They’re like lumps of rubber and need a lot of garlic and chilli to make them palatable. Cooked or even raw mussels are much better than limpets.

As already suggested i would head north to the cleaner waters, i will try most things but not to sure about limpets. I was down Whitburn today and fancied picking some seaweed after watching River Cottage but couldn't find enough of the right stuff.

Came in from fishing in the kayak one day at newbiggin 4 chinks came up the car park all had a bucket full to the brim with limpet
got be eaten them 
cant see them doing you any harm we eat willicks ive used them for bait on the odd time when running low and had fish on them with mussell if the fish are there they will eat out

With the industry that has been present at our ports, harbour and estuary mussels are best avoided. The foreshore in the Blyth and the Tyne both contain heavy metals. They are also susceptible to Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning(PSP). Heres an interesting link if your intersted.

jamie all sea weed on british isles coast is edible cooked one way or another, there is one taht is supposed to make something like crisps try googling it or book from library

it was the stuff that looks like a hand as it has 5 fingers on it, would need quite a bit though and it was only there in patches. Wouldnt fancy eating some of the bladderwrack that was down whitburn it would be like chewing a rubber boot! I knew all types were edible but dont like the look of some of it

I them where the days m8 tryed them last feb on drum head 40 people on pier for 1 fish stuck a limpet on and landed 8 cod in 9 casts fish to 7lb getting called all the so+so's
Was that when a nicked your killer bait and landed a 5lb er has it's days Geordy lad
It certanly was m8 bring on them cod
