My Best Pollack

Been unable to get out fishing for the last ten weeks thanks to an injury, still shouldn't be fishing but being up at Seahouses for the last few weeks and having just bought a new spiunning rod i just had to have a practice. Went to some local rocks and had a few good casts but no fish then went to cast out again but the line got caught on my finger splint and i only managed a 2ft cast. As i started to reel in my rod doubled over and after a short but hard fight even harder with only 1 good hand i landed my biggest shore or boat pollack at just under 5lbs.
I was over the moon and it was worth waiting ten weeks for!!!

Had a few more casts and saw plenty of big fish chasing my lure, one even bit the tale off my jelly worm but didn't get a good bite until just before i was due to be picked up when i got a great take just a foot from the rocks i was on...this was an even better fish but it proved too good as it snapped the line while i was trying to lift it up the rock face.... I wasn't too bothered as the first one had already made my day and i now know where to catch them the next time!!

Nice one Gregg, I can't wait for the end of the month when we go to Scotland. We will be giving the Pollack a good try. Paul (Hiram) got a cracker two years ago up there, it was about 7 1/2 lb, he lost a better one a few minutes later. I can still hear him swearing at it now lol.

That's quality mate - might head up there myself at some point.

Just bought a 10ft Teleslcopic Spinning rod and keen to break it in...

How were you weighting the lures? I've seen lead heads and also wieghted hooks...

I'm going to Wales in the summer and am looking forward to hopping round the rock marks of the Gower Peninsula

Craster can be a good mark also. Both methods will work and also try sandeels too. I have a couple of telescopic rods but am not too sure they would pull a decent Pollack in though. I tend to use a Carp rod or a decent spinning rod.

Will let you know when we are going up if you fancy coming.

Cheers Jim that'd be good

I know telescopics aren't ideal but i bought it mainly with my summer hols in mind - we're going camping for two weeks and will be packing the one litre corsa to the hilt so I figured on packing light gear for the fishing.

It's a Daiwa Vertice 10ft - anyone heard anything good/bad about them?

I was using weighted hooks but the fish all seemed to be it the kelp along the side of the rocks so you don't need to cast far. i was using a strong spinning rod and it felt like it was going to snap with the 2nd fish.

We were hoping to get up this week but not a great forecast. If conditions are ok next week you are welcome if you can make it.

As Gregg says, most of the time the fish will be in and around the weed, sometimes you lift your gear out of the water far too early and miss the ones under your feet.

Nowt better than watching a good fish chasing your lure. :o :D

I would be up for a trip up there mate! let me know

Caught it on a firetail jelly worm but was also using silver spinners. The water was very clear and i could see loads of fish chasing, they all looked a very good size. Got two massive fillets off it weighing 3lbs.

Would love to join you but i need to stay close to home as the wife is about to drop!!! Might give rocks at Newbiggen a go as i had some good sport there last year with pollack, coalies, mackerel and codling.

I wouldn't mind going up with u's and getting to meet some of the people off the site but the next few weeks is a bit iffy as my wife is due to go into labour any time...

We might even get away with Saturday but as you say Sunday is looking great. Will probably have a look up either Monday or Tuesday night if it stays settled.

Jim.
