Went to my sons at Throckley so had a couple of hours in river. A nice comfy spot used some rag I had . First chuck a decent flattie followed by the smallest coddling u ever saw. I used smaller hooks and small baits on a 3 hook rig and was picking up small fish. How does that work. Changed to bigger rig and pulled a 37cm cod which was hooked so deep had to gut it to get hook out so gave it to a bloke fishing on the bend up from me. Last chuck had a massive tug so struck and after a good run up and then back down the river it was a 3ft eel. The guy up from me was fishing for eels so he bagged it and went home:) Finished the sesh with another postage stamp flattie.

Common Eels

Good post ,But is the taking of Eels still not banned in all the rivers and inshore waters of the UK.

It just goes to show, I've been spending a fortune over the summer driving down to Shields to fish, when I could have simply driven 5 miles from home and dropped a line in!

wouldn't expect to catch many mackerel at Newburn mind you:D

We used to fish Newburn and Ryton "Willows" when we were kids, I never ever caught a thing, although our lad once pulled a flattie out, next to the sewer outfall on the Ryton side.

Well done anyway, shame about the eel.:)

cheers

I am very sorry about the eel as I did not know you could not take them. people take them out of rivers so they don't eat the young par or has that changed now , it must have. The lower and middle reaches of the wear always took the eels out but I don't have any idea what the rules are now regards the eel population. I will now check up on this. SORRY.:red:
